What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • prepare for a dissertation in geography/environmental science
  • learn core elements that make up geographical thought. This will cover both human and physical geography
  • engage in ideas that geography and environmental science are critical and reflective disciplines
  • You will learn about the broad conceptual and methodological frames behind geography and environmental science. You will learn how these inform their study and practice

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • understand the core elements that make up geographical thought in both human and physical geography
  • critically evaluate commonalities and diversity of approaches of the epistemologies of physical and human geography and environmental science
  • understand geography as an academic discipline. You will see that this has incorporated and developed philosophical ideas from beyond disciplinary boundaries
  • engage with the applied theoretical issues. These are core to preparing for doing a geography/environmental science dissertation

Assignments / assessment

  • coursework (100%):
    • 1,500 word module essay, focused on a module topic (50%)
    • 1,500 word review of a topic chosen by the student (50%)

This module does not have a final exam.
