Computer Aided Design module (GA22007)
Develop practical skills in 2D and 3D Computer Aided Design using AutoCAD and SolidWorks for engineering design applications
Computer Aided Design introduces the software tools used across modern engineering enterprises at SCQF Level 8.
The module covers 2D draughting using AutoCAD, including the creation of basic geometry, dimensioning, title borders, layers, and views, as well as engineering drawing types (manufacturing, general arrangement, and assembly drawings), orthographic projection, dimensional tolerancing, and surface finish specifications.
You will also develop skills in 3D parametric solid modelling using SolidWorks, including feature creation, sketch constraints, editing, assembly modelling, and automatic generation of 2D drawings from 3D models.
The module also covers CAD export formats and their use in downstream engineering applications such as rapid prototyping and CNC machining.
What you will learn
In this module, you will:
- Create and interpret 2D engineering drawings including dimensions, hidden views, centre lines, and hatching using AutoCAD
- Apply dimensional tolerancing and surface finish specifications to engineering drawings
- Produce parametric 3D solid part and assembly models using SolidWorks
- Generate 2D engineering drawings automatically from 3D solid models
- Select appropriate CAD export formats (DXF, STEP, IGES, STL) for different practical engineering applications
- Understand the differences between 2D draughting and 3D modelling packages and their appropriate application areas
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
- Exercise a working proficiency in the use of 2D and 3D CAD software applications
- Appreciate the differences between, and the application areas of; 2D draughting and 3D modelling packages
- Interpret first and third angle projection views, and create and interpret 2D engineering drawings with correct dimensioning and annotation
- Understand and specify dimensional tolerances and surface finish requirements on engineering components
- Produce parametric 3D models of engineering components and assemblies, understanding sketch constraints, features, and error resolution
- Generate solid model outputs suitable for rapid prototyping, CNC machining, and tooling manufacture, and understand the limitations of various export file formats
