Leadership and Management module (GA21001)
Learn about leadership and management theories, styles and best practices, and develops practical tools for assessing and improving leadership in organisations
This module provides a detailed and comparative understanding of how leadership and management theory has evolved, examining the relative strengths and weaknesses of different approaches.
Topics include defining leadership, understanding human motivation, theories of leadership, bad leadership, leadership in adversity, coaching and coaching techniques, building quality teams, organisational structure and culture, and issues in global leadership.
As well as developing theoretical understanding, you will gain a range of practical tools and frameworks for assessing your own and others' leadership and managerial skills, contributing to more capable and resilient organisations.
Teaching uses a blended-learning approach combining workshop sessions with self-directed learning via MyDundee. Assessment consists of an individual essay (60%) and an individual developmental reflection.
This module is delivered as part of a Graduate Apprenticeship, with teaching taking place one day a week on Dundee's City Campus.

- Critically assess the culture within an organisation and contribute effectively towards positive change.
- Assess and monitor leadership and managerial skills — your own and others' — and determine appropriate courses of action.
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
- Demonstrate a detailed understanding of leadership theories, styles and models, and their relative strengths and weaknesses.
- Demonstrate a detailed understanding of management theories and best practices, and be more fully aware of how conflict in the workplace can be positively managed.
- Develop and support colleagues using a variety of coaching and mentoring techniques and approaches.
- Critically assess the culture within your organisations and effectively contribute towards positive change.
- Assess and monitor the quality and strength of yours and others' leadership and managerial skills, and determine the best course of action to positively change organisation culture.
Assignments / assessments
Individual Essay (60%)
- Students have the choice of one of ten individual essay topics for this assignment, each covering an important aspect of the module.
Individual Developmental Reflection (40%)
- Each week, students undertake a variety of skills assessments and reflective exercises designed to get them thinking about the strengths and weaknesses of their own leadership abilities. This work is compiled as a portfolio and submitted as the Developmental Reflection.
This module does not have a final exam.
