​​This work-based learning module gives you the opportunity to document and reflect on what you have learned in the workplace during your second year on the Engineering Design and Manufacture Graduate Apprenticeship.

Using a reflective framework, you will demonstrate high-level skills including interpersonal communication, goal setting, self-management and teamwork, as well as the technical and theoretical skills developed at university and in your employer organisation.

The module covers reflective learning and writing, how to keep a professional journal, sharing best practice, and communication skills for presentations.

You will be supported through workshop sessions and workplace mentor meetings throughout the year. Assessment consists of a journal (15%), a two-stage final report (Semester 1 submission: 20%, Semester 2/3 submission: 40%) and an oral presentation (25%). This module runs across the full academic year as part of the Graduate Apprenticeship programme. 

What you will learn

  • ​Demonstrate ongoing reflection on your development as an engineer through a maintained professional journal. 
  • ​Communicate engineering project details clearly and concisely in written and oral formats. 

​By the end of this module, you will be able to: 

  • ​Use a reflective framework to consider their own learning in the workplace. 
  • ​Present evidence of achievement in relation to the Skills Development Scotland framework. 
  • ​Demonstrate ongoing reflection on their development as engineers by keeping a journal. 
  • ​Communicate engineering project details in a clear and concise manner.​

Assignments / assessments

​​Journal — 20% 

  • ​A professional journal maintained throughout the academic year, documenting workplace experiences and ongoing reflection. 

​Two-Stage Written Report — 60% 

  • ​A staged report with a Semester 1 submission (20%) and a final Semester 2/3 submission (40%), presenting evidence of professional and technical development. 

​Oral Presentation — 20% 

  • ​A final presentation communicating engineering project experience and skills development to an academic audience. 

​This module does not have a final exam.​
