​​Explore globalisation and its far-reaching effects on the business environment. 

​You will examine globalisation from many perspectives. You will develop your understanding of the major forces shaping international business. 

​Topics covered include: 

  • ​globalisation theories and models 
  • ​the business and cultural environment 
  • ​the global economic environment 
  • ​the political environment and the interrelationship between politics and business 
  • ​the legal environment 
  • ​ecology and climate change 
  • ​ethics and social responsibility 
  • ​the prospects for sustainable business 

​Each area you examine will pay attention to its practical implications for business management decision-making. 

​You will learn how a country's culture, history and political context influence management practice. You will also learn how technology is reshaping the international business landscape. 

​You will examine the factors that drive and constrain global expansion. This includes labour availability, technological capability and financial resources. This will be done in relation to real business scenarios. 

​The module prepares you to think critically about globalisation and its consequences. This will connect your learning to your workplace experience. 

​What you will learn 

​In this module, you will: 

  • ​learn explanations of globalisation theories and models. Learn about their relative strengths and weaknesses across different dimensions of the global environment 
  • ​analyse the impact of a country's culture, history and politics on business decision-making and management practice 
  • ​evaluate the factors affecting international business. This includes cultural bias, social institutions and stereotyping 
  • ​assess the role and impact of technology in the international business environment 
  • ​examine the legal, ecological and ethical dimensions of globalisation. This includes corporate social responsibility 
  • ​evaluate the factors influencing global expansion and the prospects for sustainable business 

​By the end of this module, you will be able to: 

  • ​understand globalisation theories and models and their application to the business environment 
  • ​analyse the impact of cultural, political, legal and ecological factors on international business decision-making 
  • ​evaluate the role of technology and ethics in the global business environment 
  • ​critically assess the factors influencing global expansion and their implications for business management

Assignments / assessments

  • ​​essay (50%) 
    • ​You will produce a written essay on a key globalisation topic. This will be issued by the module leader. 
  • ​essay (50%) 
    • ​You will produce a written essay on the globalisation effects at the workplace or chosen organisation 

​Both essays will be an opportunity for you to show your understanding of relevant theories, models and their practical business implications. 

​This module does not have a final exam.​

Teaching methods / timetable

​​You will attend three-hour weekly sessions. These combine short lectures with group and individual activities and facilitated discussions. 

​You will take an active learning approach. This will include activities and discussions that connect globalisation theory to real business and workplace contexts. 

​You will learn through blended learning. This will consist of one day per week on campus, supported by independent study in the workplace.​
