Medical art refers to the creation of illustrations and 3D models related to medicine and healthcare. It is a specialised field that combines artistic skill with a deep understanding of human anatomy.

Medical artists produce accurate and informative visuals. These help communicate complex information to a variety of audiences. Applications include medical education, patient information, medico-legal evidence, and visualising scientific research.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • experience working with other professionals
  • be exposed to a variety of medical and scientific environments, e.g. observation of surgery, visits to hospital departments
  • create medical illustrations and/or 3D models
  • learn how to communicate anatomical and medical information to various audiences
  • learn project and time management skills
  • take part in group critique sessions

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • identify and describe the various professions you are likely to work with as a practising medical artist
  • relate current developments within medical art to your own practice
  • apply anatomical knowledge from previous modules to the creation of artwork
  • design, organise, and manage self-directed projects
  • create resources to enhance the communication of specialist information. This is for both expert and general public audiences
  • critically evaluate your work and that of your peers

Assignments / assessment

  • self-directed project 1 (50%)
  • self-directed project 2 (50%)

The self-directed projects can either be of your own making or in response to a live brief. The projects will communicate anatomical or medical information. These will be for the public or specialist audiences.

This module does not have a final exam.
