Explore your creativity and learn professional visual communication skills. Students explore traditional and digital techniques while mastering design principles, preparing them to craft compelling visuals for diverse media, from print to digital platforms, meeting the demands of today's dynamic visual landscape.

Students will develop projects in their pathway that will allow them to concentrate on developing a body of work to a very high standard. The culmination of this will be manifested in a portfolio of work that will be assessed at the end of year, the portfolio becoming an important stepping-stone to employment on leaving. By completing a degree in Communication Design, you'll have a versatile skill set that equips you to create engaging visual content across different platforms, industries, and contexts.

What you will learn

In this module you will:

  • learn to produce sophisticated outcomes and design solutions selecting and using materials and processes that are appropriate to your ideas
  • communicate ideas and design solutions in visual, oral and written forms
  • plan and manage design projects from concept to completion, adhering to deadlines and constraints
  • evaluate design choices critically, considering both aesthetic and functional aspects, and continuously seek ways to refine your work
  • adapt design strategies to meet the unique needs of diverse clients and projects
  • understand the cultural and societal implications of design choices, ensuring sensitivity and inclusivity in your work

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • create visually compelling and impactful designs that effectively communicate messages to a target audience
  • analyse communication challenges and devise creative solutions that effectively convey complex ideas or messages
  • utilise industry-standard design software to bring your creative concepts to life
  • adapt design strategies to meet the unique needs of diverse clients and projects
  • address ethical considerations and social impact when developing visual content
  • curate a diverse portfolio showcasing your skills and range of projects, which will be essential when seeking employment or freelance opportunities.

Assignments / assessment

  • A final portfolio and/or exhibition of projects (100%)

This module does not have a final exam.

Teaching methods / timetable

Project work generated in an open studio

  • Assignments based on research-led idea generation and development of core specialist skills.

Briefings/Talks

  • Overviews of key concepts, principles, and historical context.
  • Case studies and key communicational theories and skillsets.

Tutorials

  • Individualised assistance to reflect on responses to briefs and optimise outcomes.
  • Group tutorials and group critiques focusing on creative problem solving and reflecting on the success of solutions.

Textbooks

  • Recommended reading list on communication theory, visual communication techniques and key specialist skillsets.

Design Software

  • Access to industry-standard design software (e.g. Adobe Creative Suite).
  • By combining these teaching methods and learning materials, students in the module will have a well-rounded learning experience that equips them with both the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed in the field.
