In this module, you will explore the intersection of artistic expression and scientific inquiry. , emphasising the role of visual thinking in both disciplines.

You will develop your own project that integrates artistic techniques with scientific concepts. This will allow you to foster creativity and critical thinking. You will explore aspects of the inter-relationship between the arts and sciences. You will explore a framework for practical investigation, critical debate and reflective practice.

Outcomes will be presented in the peer group. This can often include the opportunity of a formal exhibition with a public-facing element.

You will attend a series of lectures/seminars that discuss aspects of the inter-relations between arts and sciences. These will including guest speakers from across the University. In addition to this you will be introduced to a range of research scientists who can act as project mentors.

You will take part in a 1-day study field trip to visit related exhibitions, museums or artist’s studios.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • be introduced the debate regarding the relationship between the arts and sciences. You will look at this from both a contemporary and historical viewpoint
  • learn about a framework for interdisciplinarity and collaboration between the practices of visual arts and biological sciences
  • learn to develop your own investigations into the relationships between the arts and sciences. You will also learn to raise awareness of opportunities at the convergence of these disciplines

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • show an expanded understanding of the relationship between art and science. You will also have the ability to explore these relationships through your personal practice
  • confidently undertake or prepare for projects in collaboration with specialists from other disciplines
  • show a knowledge of related historical and contemporary practices and contexts
  • show your ability to synthesise information from other disciplines. You will also be able to reflect critically on your experience and outcomes

  • proposal for further development (25%)

You will be supported throughout the module with regular meetings and tutorial opportunities.
