You will learn about the importance of the combined relationship of studio practice and research. You will work in a vibrant working environment. The environment will be one that encourages experimentation and risk-taking. It will also be an opportunity for you to successfully apply new skills.

You will learn to critically reflect on, analyse and interpret your own work. This will be done in the wider contexts of contemporary and historic art practices.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • develop an ideas-based approach to current contemporary practice
  • examine the relationship between art conventions and innovative aesthetic strategies. You will also consider the broad influence from interdisciplinary, technical, and digital perspectives
  • focus on the processes of art production. You will also look at its varied creative outcomes. This will be done through studio presentation and supporting research journal
  • participate in study trips. These will be to related exhibitions, museums, galleries, or film screenings
  • acquire new technical, digital and practical skills through workshop inductions and projects

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • build a foundation for personal reflection in your emerging practice
  • be able to analyse and critique the work of others within a group situation. This will be informed by you developing an understanding of contemporary critical debate
  • extend your knowledge and experience of contemporary art practices. You will be able to do this in a variety of media and through personal research
  • understand the complex relationship of discipline, material choice and interpretation in relation to the subject
  • have begun to develop innovative, creative strategies and problem-solving skills. You will also have the ability to create a self-directed project
  • have an awareness of production and presentation in the studio
