This module will help you to determine which subject specialism is the right one for you. There are ten individual second year specialisms that you can progress to:

  • Fine Art
  • Art & Philosophy
  • Graphic Design
  • Illustration
  • Animation
  • Textile Design
  • Jewellery & Metal Design
  • Interior and Environmental Design
  • Experience Design
  • Product Design

In this module you can try some of these specialisms. You will do this by taking practical and project-based blocks. You can chose three different subjects.

These choices will have been determined by your experience of the course in Semester 1. You will also have had introductory presentations from all subject specialisms.

Each project block begins with an introductory talk. You will also be provided with a written brief and other study materials. This period of study is extremely flexible. You can effectively design your own course based on your own needs and ambitions for future study.

You can evaluate your suitability for each area from both your own experience of the blocks. You will also have input and feedback from the subject-specific staff.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • consolidate your choice of specialism
  • gain experience of distinct areas of specialised study
  • further develop a portfolio of work

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • show development and improvement to your practical and technical skills
  • show increased capability as an independent creative thinker
  • present and display your work effectively. You will also be able to reflect on what you have achieved and learned

Assignments / assessment

  • coursework (100%)

All work is practical. You will document your physical artwork through photographs. Each individual project will be presented as a separate pdf. This will be submitted at the end of each block.

This module does not have a final exam.

Teaching methods / timetable

This module is a practical one and you will be based in one of our studios for its duration. You will have your own workspace and have access to materials and equipment. Some specialised workshops may be offered as applicable to your subject choice.

You will have daily studio contact time with staff. You can also undertake personal study and research and take responsibility for your own learning. You will take part in individual and group tutorials and attend introductory lectures. These will mostly be in-person.
