Ways of Drawing module (DJ11001)
All students take this module in the first semester. You will focus on drawing. This is a fundamental aspect of art and design practice
You will take this module in the first semester along with the rest of your year. In the module, you will have a single project on the subject of ‘Drawing’. During this, you will work in an art studio.
The module begins with an introductory lecture. You will be provided with a written brief for the project. You will also receive supporting material. This is intended to encourage and to develop your practical work and effective research.
You will be encouraged to draw with a wide range of materials and at different scales. You will consider what the purposes of drawing are. After producing some observational studies, you will go on to develop your own creative ideas and outcomes based on your original drawings.
By doing the project you will be practicing and expanding your technical skills. You will gain experience in a creative process that is fundamental to all practices and disciplines in an art college. This creative process involves the keen observation and recording of visual material. This is then developed into innovative works of Art and Design. Experience of this skill will be a valuable skill throughout the rest of your course.
You will study examples of both artists' and designers' practices in this module. This is an opportunity to widen your knowledge and understanding of drawing.
What you will learn
In this module, you will:
- gained knowledge and understanding of drawing. This will be done through creating your own drawings and creative outcomes. It will also involve research of artists' and designers' practices

- expand your understanding of drawing in various art and design contexts. You will be able to do this through research, discussion and practice

Assignments / assessment
- coursework (100%)
You will have been documenting your physical artwork photographically throughout the module. This will be presented in a 10-page PDF document containing images and accompanying text. Your initial submission will have been made at the end of the module (Week 3).
At this point, you will be asked to reflect on your own studies. You will look at your own performance and what you have learned. As well as this, you will receive formative written feedback from staff on the work you produced and submitted. This will allow you to make any improvements to your submission before you are formally assessed in December.
This means that much of the work needed for the final assessment will have been completed in advance.
This module does not have a final exam.
