Learn how to undertake and supervise projects involving concrete structures. This will cover their inspection, assessment, strengthening, and repair
10
CE51043
You will learn to be able to undertake and supervise projects involving concrete structures. This will involve their inspection, assessment, strengthening and repair.
You will learn about both the basic physics and chemistry of concrete deterioration processes. This will include how concrete structures can be assessed for residual strength and durability.
You will also cover practical health and safety and environmental issues. In particular, you will cover their effect on the management of the maintenance of concrete structures.
What you will learn:
In this module, you will:
- learn about deterioration processes and construction defects in concrete
- learn how damage, such as fire, impact, and overloading, effects the serviceability of concrete elements
- learn about the causes of reinforcement corrosion. You will learn how it can be repaired by conventional and electrochemical methods
- learn about the effects of cracks in concrete sections. You will learn about their implication on serviceability and durability
By the end of module, you will be able to:
- recognise and determine how common defects in concrete structures are caused
- design and supervise concrete strengthening operations to enable structural defects are satisfactorily rehabilitated
- ensure that repairs are carried out in a safe and environmentally-responsible manner
- effectively communicate technical aspects of concrete assessment and repair
Assignments / assessment
- coursework (40%)
- exam (60%)
Teaching methods / timetable
- lectures
- site visit
- tour of structure to visually inspect examples of deterioration and construction defects
