​​Anatomical specimens underpin education and training across medicine, surgery, and the health professions. This module gives you a thorough grounding in the techniques used to prepare and preserve them. 

​You'll study the practical processes and underlying principles of embalming, including Thiel soft-fix embalming, which produces flexible specimens suited to surgical skills training. Plastination and osteological preparations are also covered, along with a comparison of when each technique is most appropriate. 

​The use of human tissue in clinical and surgical training is a key theme. You'll explore how surgical skills models support clinical education and how skeletal material is prepared for anatomical teaching. The history of anatomical embalming provides important context for current practice. 

​Health and safety is a core subject throughout. You'll study the legislation and precautions that govern work with human material, preparing you to work safely and responsibly. 

​What you will learn 

​In this module, you will: 

  • ​gain an understanding and working knowledge of the anatomical techniques used to prepare and preserve human material 

​By the end of this module, you will be able to: 

  • ​describe the practical process of embalming 
  • ​describe the differences between anatomical preparation techniques and explain when each is best used 
  • ​explain how surgical skills models support clinical and surgical training, and describe how skeletal material is prepared for anatomy education 
  • ​describe health and safety considerations in relation to embalming and human anatomical specimens 
  • ​produce a short essay on the history of anatomical embalming​

Teaching methods / timetable

  • Lectures will be in person in assigned classrooms/lecture theatre

​One laboratory session takes place at the Dundee Institute for Healthcare Simulation (Surgical Skills Centre) at Ninewells Hospital.​
