Islamic Capital Markets module (BU51022)

The module examines the nature of Shariah-compliant capital markets as well as their structure and products. It provides an advanced practical analysis of the applied models and working mechanisms of Islamic capital markets.

You will develop a critical understanding of screening methodologies of the assets and issues of Shariah compliancy. You will also gain a critical appreciation of the role of Islamic capital markets in the economic development of Muslim countries.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

• understand the aspects of the law of capital markets from an Islamic law perspective
• understand the basic elements of Islamic law in general and the Sharia framework within which capital markets could legitimately work
• understand the types and structures of financial markets including Islamic capital markets
• understand the Islamic principles and their constraints on capital markets
• learn about Islamic equity markets, sukuk markets, loan markets, Islamic fund management, Islamic financial engineering, Islamic derivatives market, and corporate governance of Islamic capital markets

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

• critically analyse and examine Islamic equity markets, sukuk markets, loan markets, Islamic fund management, Islamic financial engineering, Islamic derivatives market, and corporate governance of Islamic capital markets
• gain extensive knowledge of the applications of Capital Markets products within an Islamic framework
