This module gives you the opportunity to develop holistic, integrated design projects from inception to detailed design. 

​You will apply integrated strategies across structure, construction technology, materials, and services. You will also consider ventilation, thermal performance, lighting, and acoustics. Throughout, you will respond critically and ethically to a brief, keeping social, ecological, and sustainable considerations central to your thinking. 

​Your design portfolio will document appropriate consideration of fire safety, life safety, wellbeing, and inclusivity. You will engage with global, national, and professional climate targets as your design develops. 

​Lectures, workshops, and seminars in Technology and Environment, Management Practice and Law, and Design Methods all inform your studio project. These also prepare you for your future professional career. 

​What you will learn 

​In this module, you will: 

  • ​develop holistic, integrated design projects from inception to detailed design 
  • ​apply creative approaches to architectural design, integrating structure, construction technology, materials, services, and environmental systems 
  • ​respond critically and ethically to a client brief, considering user needs, legislation, and performance standards 
  • ​take considered, evidence-based decisions in individual and collaborative settings 
  • ​engage with global, national, and professional climate targets in your design work 

​By the end of this module, you will be able to: 

  • ​demonstrate broad, integrated knowledge of the legal, professional, and business frameworks within which architects operate 
  • ​appraise, develop, and apply a brief through a process of testing and evaluation, considering client requirements, user needs, legislation, and financial standards 
  • ​develop and integrate sustainable technological strategies for structure, construction, materials, services, and environmental systems, including fire and life safety, within a holistic design proposal 
  • ​generate, apply, and communicate appropriate theoretical concepts to inform design thinking, using research, reflection, and experimentation to develop effective solutions that respond to cultural and environmental context 
  • ​evaluate and respond to physical, environmental, economic, and social contexts through an integrated design process, giving appropriate consideration to fire safety, life safety, wellbeing, and inclusivity 
  • ​take considered, evidence-based decisions exercising autonomy in individual and collaborative settings, demonstrating an ethical approach​
