Space Form and Structure module (AR11016)
You will learn about the relationship between space, form and structure. You will also learn about the articulation of material expression
Throughout the module you will develop 3D physical modelling skills. You will also learn scale hand-drawing practices.
You will explore a variety of graphic and modelling techniques in studio tutorials. These will allow you to develop your range of creative design methods. You will explore architectural design ideas. You will also developing a basic understanding of the articulation of space, structure and envelope. This will be in relation to strategies which impact upon the environment.
In addition to the design studio project, you will also have supporting lectures. These will introduce you to the principles of building structures.
The Space Form and Structure project is structured in two stages within a studio environment. You will work on short, sequential, exploratory and investigative design exercises. This will involve working in small groups of two to three members. You will then work individually on a personally produced resolved design presentation
The design exercises help you learn about the relationship between structure and form in the development of architectural designs.
The studio exercises also introduce you to creative design methods.
What you will learn
In this module, you will:
- learn about the relationship between space, form and structure
- learn about the articulation of tectonic and stereotomic architecture
- develop an understanding of the function of primary and secondary structure. You will also learn about the relationship between materials and structural form
By the end of the module, you will be able to:
- show an understanding of primary and secondary structures. You will also be able to understand the relationship between space, material and form
- investigate and apply a range of design methods
- use analytical skills to evaluate and communicate design decisions
- use a range of communication skills, both visual and verbal to clearly convey ideas
Assignments / assessment
- design folio of produced 3D models, scaled drawings, digitally enhanced photographic imagery. This will be supported by a verbal presentation. (80%)
- multiple choice test (20%)
Teaching methods / timetable
This module is taught primarily in a studio-based environment. The studio design exercises and coursework are also supported by a series of lectures. These will explore the principles of structure in the design of buildings.
You will also be taught through:
- studio tutorials
- practical problem solving workshops
- design presentations
