Showcase Spotlight: Weightlifting for Osteoporosis Prevention in Women

Osteoporosis is a disease that is characterized by a decrease in bone mass, which results in fragile bones and an increased risk of fractures. Women are at particular risk of developing osteoporosis due to rapid bone-loss during menopause. Studies show that resistance exercises like weightlifting can help decrease the rate of bone-loss and can even contribute to an increase in bone density. Despite the benefits of weightlifting combined with the disproportionate risk they face of developing osteoporosis, women’s participation in the activity is low.

To combat this issue, DJCAD student Oliva Lambert created a web-based visual guide with the goal of educating people on the risks of osteoporosis and the benefits of weightlifting. It includes illustrations, animations, and informative text designed to encourage women to lift weights for their bone-health.
