There are two major airports in Glasgow: Prestwick is further from Dundee than Glasgow International.

To reach Dundee from Prestwick you need to change at Glasgow. Prestwick Airport has its own bus and train stations with services to Glasgow.

Travel to Dundee by bus

From Prestwick Airport, catch the Stagecoach X77 bus to Glasgow Buchanan Street Bus Station. A single ticket costs approximately £7.80 and can be purchased from the driver.

There are regular buses from Buchanan Street Bus Station to Dundee Bus Station. The Scottish CityLink service to Aberdeen stops at Dundee and takes about 90 minutes.

The CityLink bus to Dundee is a stopping service which takes over two hours, it is therefore quicker to get the CityLink Aberdeen bus to Dundee even if you have to wait at the bus station.

The price of a single fare to Dundee on either CityLink service is around £21. You pay the driver as you board the bus.

Megabus buses to Dundee must be booked in advance from their website and can be cheaper, however if you miss the bus you have booked you can not use your ticket on a later journey and will have to pay again.

Travel to Dundee by train

Prestwick has its own train station with services to Glasgow Central station. Once you arrive at Glasgow Central, there is a five minute walk to Glasgow Queen Street Station from where the train to Dundee leaves.

There are regular direct trains from Glasgow Queen Street Station to Dundee. All trains to Aberdeen (or Dyce) stop at Dundee. Glasgow Queen Street is a main station with many facilities, such as places to eat, however you must keep your luggage with you at all times. (There are paid left luggage facilities at Queen Street station.)

Glasgow Central Station is for trains to London via the West Coast of Britain. There are no trains to Dundee from Glasgow Central, only Queen Street.

The cost of a standard single fare from Prestwick to Dundee is approximately £50.60 upwards on the day. You must buy a ticket from a ticket machine on the concourse as there are ticket operated barriers to reach the platforms. Tickets will be checked by an inspector on the train who will validate your ticket on-board during the journey.

At Prestwick, choose Dundee as your destination and the machine will dispense tickets for both parts of your journey. You will need to use the correct ticket to activate the barriers at the stations in Glasgow and to leave the station in Dundee.

Alternatively, if you get the Stagecoach X77 bus to Glasgow and then take the train from Queen Street Station the total cost is approximately £35 (£7.80 for bus, £27.20 upwards for the train)

It can be cheaper to book your train ticket in advance and pick it up at the station using the credit card you used to pay as identification. Some advance tickets are only valid for particular train company services (such as ScotRail or LNER). Please read the details on the ticket website carefully before buying.
