How to use LapSafe lockers

Updated on 4 January 2024

Find out how to borrow a university-managed laptop from our self service lockers.

On this page

The LapSafe Lockers in the Main Library allow you to borrow a university managed laptop for a short duration. For use only in the Main Library, these laptops allow more flexibility in where you choose to study. It also means that you can borrow and use a laptop if you are unable to use your own for any reason.

Laptops are for a short duration loan only and are not provided with chargers to encourage the short-term nature of the loan. The typical loan is expected to last a couple of hours. However, the loan will be applied to your library account for 24 hours from the time the loan is confirmed. When you borrow a laptop from the locker, the expected return time and date will be stated on the screen.

If the laptop is not returned, you will receive overdue reminders by email. You may be liable for fines and overdue fees if the laptop is not returned on time.

When you borrow a laptop, you are responsible for keeping it safe and secure. It must not be left unattended at any point and it must be returned to the lockers when you are finished with it. The laptops are charged using USB C chargers built into each locker bay. When you borrow a laptop, you must unplug it from the charger and only remove the laptop. When you return the laptop to the locker, it must be plugged back in to charge in the bay before you close the door. Otherwise, the locker will not count the laptop as having been returned.

Before you borrow a laptop, you must accept the terms and conditions of the loan, listed below.

Terms and conditions of loan

  • Laptops are for a short duration loan only and are not provided with chargers to encourage the short-term nature of the loan.
  • The laptop must not be removed from the Main Library. The laptops will not work off campus as they use a virtual desktop environment which requires the Eduroam Wireless Network.
  • The laptop must not be left unattended at any point of your loan. They should be returned to the locker if you are planning to leave the Library, and a new one can be issued when you return.
  • The laptop must be returned to the locker bay and plugged back into the USB-C Charger before the door is closed. A laptop that is not plugged in to charge will not be counted as returned. You may accrue fines and/or charges as a result, even if the laptop is placed back in the bay.
  • Any damage to a laptop or loss of a laptop must be reported to a member of Library staff immediately.
