Important Note Regarding BRP cards: On December 4th, the UK Government released an update regarding the rollout of eVisas, following concerns that many visa holders have been unable to fully set up a UKVI account and access their eVisa. In the update, the Government confirmed that carriers, such as airlines, will still accept biometric residence permits or EU Settlement Scheme biometric residence cards, which expire on December 31, 2024, as valid proof of travel permission beyond that date. This measure will remain in place until at least March 31, 2025.

An eVisa is an online record of your immigration status and the conditions of your permission to enter or stay in the UK. Your eVisa is accessed via your UKVI account.

How to get an eVisa

You may already have an eVisa if any of the following apply to you:

  • You applied to the EU Settlement Scheme
  • You used the ‘UK Immigration: ID Check’ app to prove your identity when applying for a visa
  • You created a UKVI account when applying for a visa (you’ll have received a UKVI account confirmation email)
  • You created a UKVI account to get access to an eVisa (an online record of your immigration status) - you’ll have received an email about this

Register for a UKVI account to switch to an eVisa

You can register for a UKVI account on Gov.uk's website.

You will need:

  • access to a smartphone
  • a mobile phone number
  • an email address
  • your valid passport
  • Your visa application number – this is the global web form (GWF) or unique application number (UAN) from your visa application.

It’s important to give a phone number and email address that you use regularly as you will need them each time you prove your digital immigration status.

The Home Office has also released a short instructional video for creating a UKVI account

How to share your immigration status

You can share your immigration status by generating a share code in the view and prove service, which will give them time-limited access to your immigration status information. You can get a new share code whenever you need one – you do not have to remember a single unique code to be able to prove your status.

The Home Office has created a short video guide for travelling internationally with your eVisa
