Creating the illusion of movement through materials and flowing patterns.

This contemporary jewellery is inspired by refraction created by moving water. I take visual inspiration from the shapes created by refraction as well as the Japanese technique of suminigashi which is a water marbling technique. I combine these together to create a repetitive flowing pattern that creates the illusion of movement through form and materials. I use mirrors in my work to enhance this illusion as it imitates the way light bounces off the water's surface. The forms also create hypnotic reflections and sparkle in the light creating a mesmerising effect as well as a calm feeling. I want my work to have this quality as I began this project by gathering visual inspiration from various aquariums which all had a calming and hypnotic atmosphere with gentle sparkling colourful refraction that I got lost in. I hope the work holds these qualities because water is a substance we interact with every single day and it's easy to forget how beautiful it can be.
