Noemi Collins

Animation BDes (Hons)

I'm a director, visual development artist and animator and spent most of my final year pouring my heart into my group's film: Chaos.

About

Portrait of Neomi Collins.

Over the past year, I have practised many disciplines from visual development to post-production. But most importantly, I have become a devoted storyteller. No matter the project, the most important thing for me is to understand the purpose of each element and to make sure that it tells the story to its fullest potential. Intensive research into the subject, and finding a way to personally relate to a story or character are essential to me.

For my degree film 'Chaos' I was the director, character designer, concept artist, background artist, character animator and compositor. Whatever the production pipeline asked of me I eagerly tried out new techniques and tools. Since I was telling a story that stemmed from my own introspection and ideas, it presented a wonderful opportunity to develop a completely new and personal visual language. I am proud that with the hard work of my wonderful team members, we managed to create a beautiful, but also meaningful and contemplative film.

"Momo" by Michael Ende influenced me a lot growing up. I always wanted to be as strong-minded, clever and thoughtful as Momo herself. The story deals with the meaning of time and teaches us to value loved ones and activities as well as quiet and mindfulness, which are all values I hold dearly. Therefore, designing Momo for a personal project was very special but also challenging, because I wanted to do her justice. You can see her final character sheets below, or visit my website to see the full project.

Chaos - Visual Development

A colour script for the film “Chaos”. It shows 12 different frames of the film. The colours progress from a green theme to a pink one, then to black, to purple, black and eventually green again.

Here's the colour script for Chaos. This image helped us make sense of the film’s visuals early in the process and defined the progression of colour throughout the story.

Momo - Character Design

Portrait sketches of the character “Momo” on a white background. They show 7 different expressions ranging from surprise to sadness, anger, and joy. Momo has thick, long, dark brown, curly hair and tan skin. Her facial features are large, she appears to be a young teen girl. She is wearing a beige coat with a thick collar in a lighter colour.

I chose to give Momo a very steady and comfortable shape to signify her strength and confidence while also giving her options to hide behind parts of her hair or coat when she is overwhelmed or scared. Her colours are warm and unassuming and show her caring nature and ability to fly under the radar.
