About

Genevieve Sawyer Males

Long before I knew what it was, the deconstructed landscape has always had a presence in my work. Our lives are busy, full of linear demands on our time, what we should think of as important, goals, and perspectives. These influence the way we move through the environment around us and shape our response to it. Leaving the path and moving into the spaces behind what has been prepared for our visual consumption opens up new lines of thinking and fresh perspectives. It also introduces more uncertainty and shifts in perspective.

This body of work is a visual fugue constructed from the experiences of immersion into the space, information gathered in deep mapping, and considerations of value. Using techniques that involve chance and the emergence of the unexpected in traditional mediums invites us to push past what is anticipated and helps open up new ways of seeing.

this is a black and white detail of a an abstract charcoal drawing mirroring the tree trunks in the densely planted forest, with smudges to evoke branches and leaves in the wind.
