About

portrait of Emily Chan

As an artist, Emily’s work is focused about self-documentation presenting a minimal and lofi-quality to conceptualised the ideas of being an artist's reflecting on being human. Escaping the idealistic standards of perceptions on perfection and to slow down by focusing on the self after post-lockdown.

“Observations in Private” (OIP) is an exhibition space divided in 2 sections, that explores the acts of everyday life and the potential for variants in every action.

The White Room: A blank space with desk and computer, the artist encourages the audience to interact with the computer’s documentation of the artist’s performance of the everyday. Through videos, journal entries and photographs, this is to enable the audience to dive into a personal read into the artist’s life. The audience is given an option to pick and choose how long and what information they can look into.

The Black Room: A video installation of “nap” - a performance video. This performance was a random act documented last year when I broke my foot through a fall and was limited to much movement. ‘nap’ is a memory of the peace and a time of healing for the artist. Allowing open opinions for the possible thoughts or dreams that could circulate during sleep.

OIP is an exhibition to reflect on the overwhelming world and post lockdown to ask questions and conversations on life alone, the philosophy of art, movement and common acts.
