"Give & Take" explores collaborative, participatory drawing, suspending subjective control and giving way to chance.

About

Subverting the tools and altering the environmental scenarios commonly associated with traditional artistic creation, disrupts the process of mark making. Subjective control is suspended giving way to chance. This provides the opportunity for unforeseen outcomes that can only occur outside the constraints of prior knowledge and control.

“Give & Take” is a participatory drawing apparatus, designed for collaboration. Two participants are tethered by their dominant hand so that the movement of one directly affects the other. The participants must find ways to work together to produce drawings from each perspective of a common scene. The results produced under these limitations act as a projective tool. They document not only two approaches and perspectives but also an account of the physical and psychological attributes inherent in each participant.

"Tie In" documents an early experiment into participatory drawing. Two Participants are tied at the wrist and are forced to collaborate in order to produce two drawings of one common scene from two perspectives.

"Sketchbook" documents an experiment in which the participant must try to complete a drawing of a scene before them while the sketchbook shuts at random intervals.
