Working around the juxtaposition between escapism and reality of a single moment in time
About
My work is about breaking down a single moment of reality with the juxtaposition of an escapist's reality, My work for the degree show is inspired by the curatorial work of Mark Dion, more specifically his exhibition piece "Misadventures of a 21st-century naturalist" I like how he takes a naturalists office and want to create my own interpretation with a fine art student.
Using my own desk area as inspiration I intend to recreate this with a splash of escapism through a sculpture of a War between ducks and a group of basic human like figures. The human like figures each refer to a moment in my life where I have been put through pain such as an eye surgery or a lung infection and They have been stabbed through these areas like a voodoo doll, The ducks and the leader of a giant male with a duck head is the major break of reality I'm envisioning. This is to show my contrasting sides of my personality, the dreamy escapist and the cynical realist.
In the centre of the table will be a full printed comic that I have spent the last 3 months working on. The comic focuses on the last 5 years of my life through contrasting perspectives, The images reflect a metaphorical look at my life while the speech follows a more literal voice. On the fake wall behind the desk I intend to put up a lot of my work over the last 5 years to showcase another journey similar to my comic but through my artwork of the last 5 years.
