About

Profile picture of Fine Art graduate Nathan Price

With 18 years of martial arts practice heavily influencing Nathan’s perspective, work ethic, mindset, and energetic nature, art school has allowed enhanced connections to form across different facets of his life, most notably between his creative practice and martial arts background.

Nathan applies the self-defence precept of ‘pace and lead’ to his artistic practice. This transferable skill can be described as responding to an action, such as aggression or interruption, by joining it (pace), then leading the energy created by that action towards a more desirable outcome (lead).

Nathan implements this skill both in a mental and physical sense, removing internal conflicts, and stressors, and encouraging his ephemeral, serendipitous, and fluent approach to his manipulation of materials. His playful and imaginative practice favours the process over the outcome as he translates his methods of creation into online entertainment. This venture into content creation stems from realising how crucial accessible entertainment was for well-being, motivation, and inspiration during the pandemic.

Integral to Nathan’s process are unplanned journeys (dérives), through a terrain that provides creative stimuli and opportunities to find and collect discarded objects. Placing emphasis on resourcefulness, Nathan utilises found materials, as well as reconstituting previous creations into new works, viewing his creations as continually evolving and adapting components towards the next thing.

HIGH VOLTAGE

A trial installation within the studio environment - Wide angle

Instagram Reel 1 -  "Watch the sparks fly as I begin building the sculptural forms"

Art as online entertainment. The process documentation becoming an art form in itself.

Mixed Media Installation

These images are an indicator of what my degree show installation will look like. A three-dimensional collage that you can manoeuvre through and explore. "High Voltage" aims to capture an intense feeling of fun, excitement and passion. My goal was that the work be reflective of my energy, movement, and feelings when I am imaginatively creating with a freer state of mind. I wanted this body of work (both physical and digital aspects) to captivate, intrigue, and ignite the imagination of the viewer. Imagination as a human faculty is our most powerful tool, yet society seems to suppress and diminish this as we grow up. Everyone has this faculty. Let my work tap into that and possibly reawaken this power.

Instagram Reel 2 - "Watch as I become immersed in the creative process of layering"

Documenting the process in video captures the movement, the energy, the intuition, the experimentation, and the essence of the work and my personality. This is the part i find most compelling and rewarding. This is the part i want to show.

Instagram Reel 3 - "Watch me plasma cutting into an old electricity box"

I believe the process holds more value to myself and the viewer, than if i was just to show "final result" images.

Collages

A gallery of visual documentation from my derives, as well as photographs of previous works which are now being pushed through a 2D process. Among the creative chaos are images that hold significant importance to my journey as an artist. This series holds 18 collages, all of which will become yet another component to my body of work.

Instagram Reel 4 - "Watch some fast-paced, highly energetic creativity"

In the age of social media, not only does sharing my creativity in this forum promote my practice, but it is given the opportunity to reach people worldwide and inspire/impact them in a positive way. Even if that is just giving someone entertainment and enjoyment, or inspiring other creative individuals to let go and just enjoy creating without destructive self-criticism.

I regularly share my practice on Instagram (@nathanprice.art). I encourage you to follow me, engage with and share my work, and leave feedback in the comments section. I have an online shop which i will provide a link to. If you see something you are interested in buying or getting prints made, either on my Instagram, at the DJCAD Degree Show 2022 (in-person and online), or anywhere else,  that isn't currently listed in the official shop, please don't hesitate to get in touch via Instagram direct message, through the shop contact page, or my email address (pricenathan1999@gmail.com). Thank you and I hope my work offers something positive to you.
