Eilidh Guthrie

Fine Art BA (Hons)

This multimedia installation explores my journey of mortality salience and my solace in finding a parallel between port-mortem bodies and trees.

About

portrait of EIlidh Guthrie

Through clay, bronze and wood, I explore the taboo topic of death.

Finding solace in knowing that my energy and all living organisms of the forest will return to the earth one day. Our limbs, tree limbs, all returning after life. Their decomposition becoming nutritional distribution. The “Forest Breathing”, perpetually maintaining the conditions required for all life. Where tree burrs become the bloated hybrid bodies. The sculpture studio the post-mortem examination.  The kiln, a resurrection through fire and earth.

Metamorphoses Installation

There is a black and orange ceramic sculpture in the forefront on top of a mound of clay, round the outside there is dried clay on the floor. There is a dried clay figure in the background, with several similar sculptures on top of mounds of dark grey clay on the floor.

Forest Breathing

A full shot of the installation, there are ten ceramic sculptures on top of mounds of clay on the floor. There are three bent pine branches that start from the back window and point in a curved stance towards the centre of the image. There are four tall windows at the back of the room and you can see a red leaved tree on the left and green leaved trees on the right.
A vertical shot showing 5 ceramic sculptures on top of clay mounds. Around each clay mound there is dry clay scattered on the floor. In the background there is a large, curved pine branch.
Four beach tree branches coming out of a white wall. Shadows of the branches are cast onto the wall.
