Hidden Gems is a collection of digitally printed textiles that communicate a message about the treasures of the earth and the preciousness of these treasures
Exploring the concept of ‘finding treasure’ in a metaphorical way through my own experiences as a mineral excavator, which is a hobby I have been engaged in since a young age as it became family tradition starting with my grandfather. Through this hobby I became extremely interested in our relationship with land and soils.
My visual research for this project was taken from the coastal erosion which has sculpted and engraved textures and linear patterns across the red stones that create the Arbroath coastline, and exposed the agate baring basalt rock in Montrose.
I took the rich and opulent colours from the agates and minerals incorporating them into my drawings and collages. I focused on recreating the marks and structures of the rocks through collaging and then further developing these drawings and marks digitally distorting them while still retaining hand drawn qualities.
My aim for this project was to create collections for digitally printed textiles that could be used within a home environment. I wanted to create textiles that will communicate a message about the treasures of the earth and the preciousness of these treasures, capturing the excitement and appreciation I felt when finding them. My designs are to be used as decoration through one off murals or centrepiece large rugs, becoming the main attraction of a space. As one-off pieces they relate and reflect the uniqueness of the agates and gemstones that are now rare to find.
