The Ian Karten Scholarship for Disabled Students (the “Scholarship”)

This Key Facts Document sets out the main details of the Scholarship, as at date of publication. This document should be reviewed alongside the University of Dundee Scholarship and Bursary Terms and Conditions, as those terms and conditions will provide you with additional information that apply to you in respect of the Scholarship. If there is any inconsistency between this Key Facts Document and the University of Dundee Scholarship and Bursary Terms and Conditions, the provisions of the Scholarship and Bursary Terms and Conditions will prevail.

Date of publication

September 2026: Applicable to offer holders for the MSc EduAT full-time and part-time programme with January 2027 entry.

Who is eligible?

• Open to applicants with a Home Scottish or RUK fee status
• Have either a conditional or unconditional offer to study MSc EduAT and have firmly accepted the offer.
• Only MSc EduAT programme offer-holders who are or will be in receipt of Disabled Students Allowance can apply for the Ian Karten Scholarship.
• Part-time applicants must be employed in a UK-based organisation at the time of their application for the MSc EduAT course. Funding for their second year will be contingent on grades of A–C being achieved in all modules.
• All part-time MSc EduAT students must submit an employer letter of support confirming agreement to use their workplace context for the MSc EduAT coursework. 
• Should the Recipient change employment during the programme, they must obtain and submit a new letter of support from their new employer. 
• In the event the Recipient becomes unemployed, they must notify the programme team promptly, so that a suitable work placement can be arranged, aligning with the process for full-time students.
• On applying, we expect you to consider that balancing work and study requires effective time management and realistic expectations to succeed.
• We warmly encourage applications from disabled individuals, in line with our commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. The University complies fully with the Equality Act 2010 and will make reasonable adjustments to support applicants throughout the process.

Award information

• This scholarship will cover tuition fees only; no direct payment will be made to the recipient.
• Progression will be monitored; second-year funding will be contingent on grades of A–C being achieved in all modules.
• Award reviewed annually and may be extended at the discretion of the School.
• Awards from other bodies such as discretionary grants or loans by the Scottish Government or other bursaries shall not preclude the students from receiving this scholarship.

Who will review applications?

• Applications will be reviewed by an independent Scholarships sub-group of the MSc EduAT advisory group.
• The Scholarships sub-group of the independent MSc EduAT Advisory Group will make all funding decisions; the programme delivery team shall not be involved.
• Note that decisions made by the Scholarships sub-group of the independent MSc EduAT Advisory Group are final.
• Where a specific gift is made by a company, individual, or other organisation, a representative from that entity may be invited to join the Scholarships sub-group for the purpose of reviewing and awarding that particular scholarship, if requested by the donor.
• To ensure fairness and avoid any conflict of interest, members of the programme delivery team will not be involved in reviewing scholarship essays. 
• The programme team will continue to assess general applications and personal statements for suitability in the usual way. 
• Only applicants who have been accepted onto the MSc EduAT programme will be eligible for scholarship consideration.
