Supreme Court judgement

Our message to staff and students following the recent Supreme Court judgement on the Equality Act 2010

Published on 6 May 2025

The recent Supreme Court judgment relating to the Equality Act 2010 has raised questions and concerns for many people.

At the University of Dundee, we remain committed to being an inclusive, supportive, and respectful organisation that welcomes everyone into our community, including those who are trans, nonbinary, and intersex. This reflects our values of integrity, working together and valuing people, and our EDI Strategy, which is grounded in our commitment to protecting the human rights and dignity of our community.

Since the judgement we have engaged with our LGBT+ Staff Network and other colleagues in considering the impacts of this judgement. We will wait for the updated statutory guidance from the EHRC (Equality and Human Rights Commission) prior to considering whether changes to policy or process are required. Our core commitment to being inclusive is unchanged and will remain so.

Following any required changes to policy or process, we are committed to working with those affected to ensure the University remains a safe and welcoming space for all people and to promote equity of experience for all.

Should any member of our community, student or staff, have concerns relating to their sex, gender reassignment or gender identity, support is available for students and for staff.
