Teaching and assessment for Structural Engineering with Architecture MEng (Hons)

This module is a team-based conceptual design exercise, aiming to create a suitably strong bridge in the form of a physical model for a given cost.

This will involve both structural theory to provide you with the knowledge needed to devise a design, as well as hands-on testing of materials.

Civil engineering involves building highly complex structures, and every engineering project requires different materials.

This module will introduce you to the fundamentals of material science most closely related to civil engineering. We will then explore some of the most commonly used materials.

This module will introduce you to the analysis of civil engineering structures. This involves understanding the types of loads that structures experience and how they react to these loads.

In the process, you will develop an appreciation of how structures remain in equilibrium (and don’t fall down).

Mathematics is essential to the work of an engineer. This module will help you gain confidence with your existing mathematical skills and a deeper understanding of mathematics.

This module focuses on fundamental aspects of mathematics, allowing you to build a strong foundation for further engineering mathematics modules.

Mathematics provides a means of describing, understanding, and solving a problem regardless of the field of engineering that you are studying.

This module will provide you with the mathematical skills and knowledge needed to handle an engineering degree course. It also aims to increase confidence in using and understanding mathematics.

One of the most important stages in the construction process is surveying. Surveying involves measuring the topography of the land on which a civil engineering project is to be built.

Gain the skills needed to conduct surveying will be learnt both in theory and in practice.

The module continues the development of your understanding of the basic mathematics most relevant to engineers. It covers material required for accreditation of degree programmes in engineering, and will allow you to understand subjects you will be learning about in higher levels.

Civil engineering involves the use of water and other fluids. You will explore the basic principles and discover the various applications of fluids and their mechanics.

You will gain an understanding of how liquids and gases behave, the forces that shape their movement, and how they interact with other objects.

Civil Engineers always need to work on, in, under or around the ground. In many engineering projects, the ground is a controlling factor.

In this module you will discover how "geomaterials", i.e. soil and rock, behave when we engineer them.

This module examines how civil engineering materials are affected by the often extreme environments in which they are required to operate in.

It also examines how the manufacture and use of materials can impact the environment.

Throughout the career of a civil engineer, there is a requirement to continually develop new understanding and skills and keep up with new developments in the industry.

This is referred to as Continuing Professional Development (CPD). The aim of this module is to encourage a culture of CPD amongst students.

This module will further extend your understanding of the mechanics of soil.

You will learn about more advanced soil behaviour and the design of common geotechnical engineering systems.

This module will bring together your understanding and knowledge of structural engineering while developing new skills in structural analysis and design using 3D digital software.

Your creativity will be stimulated through a team-based design activity. You will also be introduced to parametric modelling and structural optimisation.

Structures have to be designed and built in accordance with design standards. In this module, you will learn about the Eurocodes (European standards providing a common approach for structural and geotechnical design).

This module introduces you to how the Eurocodes apply to both steel and concrete structures.

This Level 3 module completes the process of equipping you with the fundamental mathematical skills needed for an undergraduate engineering degree. It also covers material required for accreditation of degree programmes in engineering.

You will perform an in-depth investigation on a topic of your choosing, working closely with an academic supervisor.

This dissertation is a key part of your honours degree and you will be matched to a supervisor who will guide you through the project activities.

You will be introduced to geotechnical design and the analysis and design of structures, while considering the properties of rock and soil.

You will gain an understanding of why ground conditions need to be assessed, and the importance of stability and safety of foundations, slopes, and structures that are underground.

The module will introduce you to the basic techniques used to manage the construction process. The module starts at the generic level, with the aim of providing a foundation on the topic.

There are often benefits in designing structures that allow for plastic deformation.

This module will equip you with a more advanced understanding of structural behaviour beyond the elastic limit. It will also introduce the design of pre-stressed concrete.

Conceptual design is the process of transforming the form and function of a structure defined in a client's brief into a tangible design through the creation and testing of ideas.

This module is designed to equip you with knowledge of the basic procedures and techniques used in conceptual design.
