Nursery

The University of Dundee Nursery offers childcare from birth to five years across two locations on the city campus

On this page

We provide high quality childcare from birth to five years and aim to prepare children for entry into primary education using a forest school philosophy in an inner-city environment.

Places are available full-time or part-time. There is a waiting list (particularly for under 2s), so we are unable to guarantee an on demand service and you are advised to enquire and apply early. Children can be added to the waiting list prior to birth.

Opening hours

Monday to Friday 08:15 - 17:15. Closed for two weeks over the Christmas period, plus three days for in-service training.

Quality childcare

Rated 5 in some areas by the Care Inspectorate, we take pride in the quality of our care

Our two locations are:

  • Dundee University Students' Association (DUSA) - 3 to 5 years
  • 8-10 Airlie Place - from birth to 5 years

The nursery works in partnership with Dundee City Council to offer a limited number of funded spaces for children aged 3 - 5 years and is registered with several childcare voucher schemes.

Our staff

Most staff are qualified to HNC level or equivalent, with all senior staff holding an SVQ L4 or BA in Childhood Practice. The Junior Nursery Manager is a qualified teacher and the Senior Nursery Manager has a post graduate diploma in Childhood Practice.

The staff to children ratio is 1 adult per 3 children (under 2 years), 1 adult per 5 children (2-3 years), and 1 adult to 8 children (3-5 years).

Assistance with childcare costs

Childcare costs can affect the ability of students to consider coming to University or, if existing arrangements change, their ability to remain here.

Financial Aid from the Scottish Government provides the University with Childcare Funds (commonly referred to as Discretional Funds) to assist student parents with formal childcare arrangements during semester. Limited support may be available during the summer e.g. for those needing to resit exams or attend academically required placements. Please see Student Funding for more information and the application form.

Duty of candour report

All health and social care services in Scotland have a duty of candour. This short report describes how our care service has operated the duty of candour during the time between 1 August 2021 and 31 July 2022.
