"What began as a professional aspiration became a transformative experience that reshaped my identity as an educator and deepened my understanding of lifelong learning.

"Balancing postgraduate study alongside my role as a working educator was a significant challenge, requiring discipline, careful time management, and personal sacrifice. Early mornings, late nights, and weekends were dedicated to study, and although there were moments of fatigue and self-doubt, I remained focused on my long-term goal.

"The programme provided a rich and intellectually stimulating environment that fostered critical thinking, reflective practice, and engagement with educational theory. It enabled me to connect theory with classroom practice, refine my teaching strategies, and reignite my passion for education.

"Completing my Master’s represents not only an academic achievement but also a commitment to continuous improvement and the transformative power of education. The knowledge and skills I have gained continue to shape my teaching practice and professional contribution, and my experience at the University of Dundee will remain a cornerstone of my ongoing development."

Muhammed Althaf Iqbal, Professional Accountancy '23

Portrait of Muhammed Althaf Iqbal

"Today, I work as a Head of Accountant at KMM Dubai, a company that operates across multiple sectors in Dubai. I never imagined my career in finance would take me into such a dynamic and diverse business environment, but here I am.

"I came to Dundee with a clear goal - to upskill. I needed something that added depth, built confidence in UK-specific accounting practices, and opened new doors.

"Dundee’s MSc Professional Accountancy did exactly that. The course didn’t just teach theory - it helped me connect the dots between academic knowledge and professional expectations. One highlight was the Sage accounting software certification, which was part of the programme. That hands-on experience made it much easier for me to later pick up tools like QuickBooks and Sage during my first job in Dundee.

"As Head of Accounting at KMM Dubai, I lead the company’s financial operations, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and strategic financial management in alignment with UAE regulations and international standards. I coordinate the accounting for multiple UK-based companies owned by the directors. I ensure compliance, accuracy, and strategic financial planning across all entities."

Tharindu Deeptha Samarathunga, Leading Learning and Teaching '21

Portrait of Tharindu Deeptha Samarathunga

"My journey in education began as a volunteer History teacher in Sri Lanka, where I developed a deep passion for strengthening values-based and social-emotional learning through school education. In 2017 I founded the Movement for Development of Rural Education to support children in war-affected and low-income communities. Wanting to deepen my understanding of how education can nurture humane values and social-emotional skills in practice, I came to the University of Dundee in 2020 as a Chevening Scholar to pursue the MEd in Leading Learning and Teaching.

"After completing my MEd, I returned to Sri Lanka and continued working in education research, policy engagement and teacher professional development. I worked with organisations such as EuroClio (Netherlands) and Save the Children (Sri Lanka) on education research and teacher training initiatives, and later at the national level with ChildFund International and UNICEF. In these roles, I supported national education programmes related to literacy, numeracy, teacher professional development and social-emotional learning in partnership with government institutions, including the Ministry of Education and Provincial Departments of Education.

"I am currently pursuing a PhD in Education at the Institute of Education, University College London (UCL). My research explores how teachers can nurture humane values among students, while also examining teacher agency, professional development and education equity—particularly in resource-constrained developing country contexts, to support realistic and quality oriented education reforms."

Ishbel Dickson, Textile Design '21

Portrait of Ishbel Dickson

"I graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design (DJCAD) in 2021 with a degree in Textile Design, right in the thick of the Covid pandemic. Like so many graduates that year, my path forward wasn't exactly clear. But when restrictions began to lift that summer, instead of waiting for the world to return to normal, I decided to go and find a new one. During my study in Dundee I look part in the University's study abroad scheme (ERASMUS then). This was really what shaped and sparked the travel bug in me.

"I got my TEFL certification and moved to Bangkok, Thailand, to teach English. It was one of the best decisions I've ever made. From there, I relocated to Budapest, Hungary, where I spent two years teaching at an international school. Each move gave me confidence, perspective, and an entrepreneurial spark I didn't know I had.

"Now I'm based in Hamburg, Germany, where I run my own TEFL company, a small startup I built from scratch. I wrote and designed my own TEFL course, which is fully accredited by Accreditat (a UK provider). I sell TEFL courses online and create content to help people, graduates and career-changers, navigate the world of online teaching and unconventional travel, just like I once needed guidance myself.

"I genuinely believe my time at DJCAD laid the groundwork for all of this. The creative freedom there taught me to think openly, take risks, and approach problems in ways I never would have otherwise. A business module I took in my final years at Dundee was a real turning point too, it opened my mind to thinking commercially and entrepreneurially, and showed me that creativity and business don't have to be separate worlds.

"Dundee made me feel like anything was possible. And it turns out, it was."

Josh Harris, Economics '24

Portrait of Josh Harris

"After graduating in 2024 with a First in Economics, I jumped into a finance internship and then landed a full-time role in London in property.

"However after coming to the realisation I don't like office work, I joined the RAF as a pilot. I'm currently coming to the end of my basic training where I hope to move on to work as a Fast Jet pilot flying combat aircraft. I credit a large part of this achievement to my time at Dundee, and I know I am a completely different man than I was before I studied here."

Amaar Bangash, Digital and Social Media Marketing '23

Portrait of Amaar Bangash

"During my studies, I served as an International Student Ambassador, participating in webinars with prospective students across South Asia, writing blogs, guiding applicants through digital platforms, and representing the university. I also worked part-time at H&M to support my living expenses while developing sales and customer service skills, and I was honoured to be a finalist for H&M Employee of the Year in Scotland. Balancing academics, my ambassadorial role, and part-time work contributed greatly to my personal and professional growth.

"Two months after returning to Pakistan, I secured a position at the Pakistan Institute of Fashion Design (PIFD), a leading fashion institution with academic affiliations in France and Italy. I now work as a consultant teaching an Introduction to Digital Marketing module and as Media and Communication Officer, leading the university’s Media and Communication Office and managing its social media marketing. As PIFD is a public sector university with students from across Pakistan - most of whom are female - my role is especially meaningful as it contributes to empowering young women to become financially independent professionals.

"I am currently applying the knowledge gained during my master’s at Dundee. Recently, I led a successful online campaign for International Women's Day that became one of the institute’s most highly engaged social media campaigns. I look forward to continuing to grow and contribute to digital marketing and education."

Shahid Sheikh, Management and Entrepreneurship '23

Portrait of Shahid Sheikh

"I have built a distinguished two-decade career in healthcare administration and strategic operations across India and the United Kingdom. Today, I serve as the Practice Manager at River House Surgery, leading the operational heartbeat of a busy primary care practice. This role allows me to embody the leadership values and strategic mindset I strengthened during my MSc in Management & Entrepreneurship at the University of Dundee. Choosing Dundee was a pivotal turning point; I embraced the academic challenges, broadened my perspective, and represented the University in the Enterprise Challenge Competition.

"In my current capacity, I oversee a multidisciplinary team of 22, including GPs, nurses, and administrators. My responsibilities span the full spectrum of primary care leadership - from managing recruitment, rotas, and financial sustainability to ensuring full compliance with CQC standards and clinical governance. I lead on quality improvement initiatives and workflow optimisation to enhance patient access while building strong relationships with PCN partners and NHS England. This position perfectly reflects my ability to combine operational expertise with the compassionate leadership that has become a hallmark of my career.

"Before moving to the UK, I spent over a decade in India leading operations in multi-speciality hospitals, achieving a 22% increase in patient satisfaction and a 10% reduction in expenses. My leadership also extended to the corporate sector, earning the 2014 BFSI Award for innovation at Bharti AXA General Insurance. Since graduating, I have successfully transitioned into the UK healthcare sector, progressing through Royal Salford Hospital and HCA Lister Hospital in London before reaching my current role. My journey is a testament to the global impact of Dundee alumni; I continue to drive meaningful change, improve patient experiences, and lead teams with integrity and purpose across international borders."

Othman A Thaher, Human Anatomy '22

Portrait of Othman Thaher

"My journey in Dundee has been shaped by curiosity, dedication, and meaningful experiences that continue to guide my path today.

"During my master’s studies at Dundee, I had the privilege of being part of the Centre for Anatomy and Human Identification (CAHID), a place renowned for its excellence in anatomical sciences and research.

"Beyond the classrooms and laboratories, the friendships and connections I built with colleagues and professors made the experience even more memorable. Despite the challenges of studying during the Covid-19 pandemic, the academic environment at Dundee remained supportive and motivating.

"After returning to my country, Palestine, I continued my journey in the same field that inspired me there. I currently work as an instructor in the Anatomy Department at the Faculty of Medicine at Arab American University in Palestine. I strive to pass on not only knowledge but also the enthusiasm for learning that I experienced during my own studies.

"Standing in front of students in the lecture hall, I often reflect on the path that brought me here - from the quiet study spaces of Dundee to the classrooms where I now teach future healthcare professionals. These experiences have strengthened my commitment to academic excellence and lifelong learning.

"Looking ahead, I hold a clear hope for the future: I aspire to return to CAHID to pursue my PhD in anatomy. Completing a doctoral degree there would not only deepen my scientific expertise but also allow me to contribute more meaningfully to research and education in anatomical sciences. This goal is more than an academic milestone - it is a continuation of a story that began in the halls of Dundee and continues today in the classroom, with the hope of one day returning to that inspiring environment to take the next step in my academic career."

"As an engineering graduate, my journey has been shaped by around 15 years of experience in strategy, governance and complex change, including leadership roles at BASF across South Asia and ASEAN. Training at IIM Calcutta further strengthened my approach to leadership, collaboration and navigating complexity.

"A major turning point came when I studied for an MSc in International Business & Strategy at the University of Dundee, graduating with distinction and ranking first in my class. Dundee broadened my perspective, challenged my assumptions and gave me the confidence to think more strategically and lead with purpose. Beyond academics, serving as a Peer Connector, completing the ASIST course and joining the Enterprise Challenge helped me grow both personally and professionally.

Portrait of Dimitrios Chatzinas

"I was one of the few lucky students to have been already working on my field, as an electronic records management officer for the Scottish Government, when I started my PGDip (which later transcended into a MSc). I was one of the even luckier ones to have been able to make two of my enduring passions part of my educational and professional development: records and archives and wargaming, specifically the worlds of Warhammer 40K.

"I was made aware of a call for papers by an independent group of scholars, on all things Warhammer (a strategy wargame that originates in the UK from the late 70s).

"I submitted an abstract and I was accepted as a speaker at the University of Heidelberg in Germany, both in 2024 and 2025, where I delivered two talks on records management and archives and how these can be seen through the lens of a sci-fi game.

"Furthermore, I got not only my colleagues at the Scottish Government interested in my talks, where I delivered a presentation on my experiences in Heidelberg, but also my fellow records managers and archivists in the Scottish Council on Archives (SCA) where I delivered a talk in January on how a discipline, which can be quite intimidating such as records management, can be engaging to people outside the field."

Madhavi Dubey, Leading Learning and Teaching '23

Portrait of Madhavi Dubey

"Soon after graduating, I began working as an Associate Tutor on the MEd course - a role that brought me immense joy and purpose. Supporting bright, ambitious students from around the world, guiding them through academic challenges, especially during their dissertation journeys, and offering encouragement on future career paths was deeply rewarding.

"In parallel, I began contributing as a Research Assistant on two major collaborative projects involving the University of Dundee. Becoming actively involved in research - a long-held dream - has been transformative. These projects, centred on enhancing teaching, learning, and wellbeing, have allowed me to apply and expand my research skills, work with brilliant academics, and contribute meaningfully to the global education community.

"The past three years have been nothing short of transformational. As a mid-career educator from India, choosing to step away from a secure life and career to pursue global education at Dundee wasn’t easy. But this leap of faith - motivated by a desire to grow, contribute, and make a difference - has opened more doors than I ever imagined. And honestly, I feel like this journey has only just begun - a lifelong learner and an educator at heart."
