TEF Gold - Teaching Excellence Framework

 

This course has been designed to offer flexible, inclusive and contemporary content which is relevant to students across local, national and international healthcare settings. The generic nature of quality improvement and patient safety also allows students from all healthcare backgrounds and specialities to come together and share their knowledge and experiences.

The course will develop your knowledge and understanding and equip you with the ability to influence and lead on quality improvement and patient safety activities in practice. You will explore the related theories, principles and culture. It will encourage you to critically analyse a range of tools and approaches associated with quality improvement and patient safety and to reflect on their application to service delivery.

There are two intakes per year (September and January), and the course is delivered on a modular basis over three and a half years. You will complete a core research module to develop your critical analysis of healthcare research, a core quality improvement module and a core risk and patient safety module. You will then undertake a final option module of your choice.  After completing these four modules you will progress to your dissertation and you will be allocated a supervisor. 

The course is delivered by a team with an international reputation for designing and delivering high quality, flexible, postgraduate courses. As well as a wealth of experience in online learning, the team provides relevant expertise and experience through the involvement of NHS colleagues currently working within the clinical environment and routinely applying, teaching and supporting the use of quality improvement and patient safety approaches.

Target Audience

All health and social care professionals who wish to develop knowledge in quality improvement.

Mode of Delivery

The primary learning and teaching strategy for this module is through open distance learning. Blackboard, webinars, Panopto (recorded lectures), the e-learning environment supported by the University of Dundee, is used throughout the module for discussion and activity based learning. Online material is provided to support each unit. The aim of Blackboard is to share information and ideas with other students who are studying on the module. As well as providing all the content online, e-activities and discussions are used throughout the module to encourage student learning, reinforce content and provide discussion forums to assist student engagement with the materials.

You will have access study skills support. Guidance on the use of My Dundee will be provided in the student handbook.

You will be supported through discussion boards, webinars (where issues can be addressed at the time) and contacting the module team. The main group is split into peer groups with a peer group leader who can be contacted directly.

Module Aims

The aims of the module are to enable you to:

  • critically evaluate the theoretical background to the concept of improvement science
  • develop critical awareness of quality improvement principles, approaches and application to service delivery

Assessment Strategy

The assessment for this module is divided into four parts which in total will form a 4,500 word assignment, designed to allow you to develop a quality improvement project and critically reflect on this.

Each part focuses on a particular aspect of quality improvement:

  • Part 1: Background Context and Drivers (1,000 words) 
  • Part 2: Quality Improvement Proposal (1,000 words)  
  • Part 3: Methods to be Adopted (1,750 words) 
  • Part 4: Critical Reflection on Process (750 words)

Target Audience

This module is applicable to all local, national and international healthcare professionals including nurses, midwives, medical staff and allied health professionals. The module is also suitable for non-clinical staff working within the health service, particularly risk management, patient safety, quality and clinical governance support staff.

Delivery Details

This module is  delivered entirely online through My Dundee (the University virtual learning environment).

Learning is facilitated through online activities and discussions between students and module tutors. As well as providing all the learning materials online, activities and discussions are used throughout the module to encourage student learning, reinforce content and provide discussion forums to assist student engagement with the materials. 

The online debate part of the summative assessment enhances the learning environment by promoting interaction between students, active participation in  your learning and deeper exploration of a key theme within the module content. Although specific formative assessment is not used, a developmental approach to the online activities and discussions ensures that you explore and receive feedback on key aspects of the second part of the summative assessment (essay) throughout the module.

Module Aim

To provide you with the opportunity to develop your understanding of the relationship between risk management and patient safety and to explore and apply your underpinning theories, principles and approaches on a local, national and international level.

Module Overview

The module addresses the ever-increasing worldwide emphasis on quality and safety and incorporates some more contemporary issues in relation to the influences on the delivery of safe care, such as human factors science and reliability theory. It comprises four units:

Unit 1: The Emergence of Risk and Patient Safety

  • historical and current context/drivers for risk and patient safety
  • definitions of risk management and patient safety and their mutual relationship
  • safety as a key dimension of quality

Unit 2: The Principles of Managing Risk and Patient Safety

  • a systems approach to managing risk and patient safety
  • the concept of systems reliability
  • cultural influences on risk and patient safety 

Unit 3: The Influence of Human Factors on Patient Safety

  • the concept of human factors science
  • exploration of a range of human factors and their impact on safety 
  • embedding patient safety through team based working

Unit 4: Approaches to Managing Risk and Patient Safety

  • national and international patient safety programmes and approaches
  • local structures and systems for managing risk and patient safety
  • identification of local tools and techniques for managing risk and patient safety

Assessment Strategy

There are 2 parts to the module assessment:

On-line debate [33% of final mark]
Assessment of each student’s participation in an online debate about a key theme from the module content.

Essay [67% of final mark] 
A 3000 word critique of an existing tool supporting the management of risk and/or patient safety from  your own area of practice. The critique must align with relevant risk and patient safety theories / principles and enable an evaluation of whether the tool should be retained modified or replaced.

This module aims to develop your knowledge and confidence in finding, appraising and applying evidence to practice. It also aims to support you to develop the knowledge and skills to critically analyse each step of the research process and to debate the potential for research to influence practice.

This module is intended to provide you with fundamental understanding of evidence-based practice and research, enabling you to examine how these concepts can be used to advance professional practice.

  • Overview of the concepts of evidence-based practice, research utilization and research
  • Critical appraisal and synthesis of evidence
  • Overview of key research traditions and approaches (quantitative and qualitative and evidence reviews)
  • Key stages of the research process
  • Data generation using a range of methods (observational and experimental studies; pre-existing documents or data sets; interviews; focus groups)
  • Introduction to statistics and statistical analysis
  • Introduction to qualitative data analysis and thematic coding

Assessment Strategy

There are two assessment for this module:

Part 1 (50% of mark): A 90 minute online exam will assess understanding of the research process, approaches to research, data generation, data analysis and research terminology.

Part 2 (50% of mark): A 2000 word essay, you will critically explore the rationale for the use of research evidence in evidence-based practice. You will be expected to demonstrate robust evaluation and synthesis of a range of research approaches, by choosing and critiquing an element of the research process.

This module forms part of the postgraduate framework and can also be taken as a stand-alone module. Although open to applicants outside the local area, attendance at the face to face sessions is compulsory.

It has been developed to meet the required needs of older people in clinical care settings. Many older patients have complex and co-morbid health conditions and their healthcare requirements exceed the traditional remit of the clinical specialty. It is suitable for nursing staff with a first level degree who care for older people as all or part of their patient population.

The module offers a blended approach to learning, combining face to face study days with work-based learning supported by online material for the duration of the module. The module offers you easy access to web resources and documents required for your studies as well as facilitating discussions and the exchange of ideas with fellow students and tutors. 

Distinctive features of this module include:

  • an optional guided reflective portfolio of evidence and you will be encouraged to use work-based reflective learning to enhance critical thinking around the evidence base for care interventions and appraisal of the factors which influence care quality

Module Aim(s)

  1. Through application in practice, to enable students to develop the necessary evidence-based knowledge, attitudes and skills to create the conditions for effective healthcare delivery for older adults with co-existing physical, mental health and/or social needs.
  2. To enable the practitioner, when appropriate, to advise, support and supervise other members of healthcare teams across diverse clinical settings.

Module Overview

This module focuses on managing the complex needs of older people in a variety of care settings and comprises three units:

  • Unit 1 The Physiology of Ageing: the impact on older people and their care requirements.
  • Unit 2 Meeting the psychological challenges for older people in the care setting
  • Unit 3 Meeting the challenges for older people living in our current society

The module encourages you to apply evidence to nursing practice through exploration of interventions to prevent a cascade of dependence and ehance wellbeing in the community; examination of the practical strategies for the treatment of acute ill health plus long term conditions management including palliative care; an exploration of the psychological impact of ill health and supportive health care strategies.

Current local, national and international initiatives aimed at improving physical and mental health care will be interpreted in relation to practice. Issues which bridge primary and secondary care are examined for example, preventing unscheduled admission and medicines management. Examination and critical discussion of the potential impact(s) of the clinical care culture, ageism and ageist treatment of older people in diverse care settings including the influence of nursing attitudes on therapeutic care delivery
Each unit is underpinned by material to support critical thinking around Care, Compassion and Dignity within the care environment.

Assessment Strategy

The module assessment comprises of:

  • summative assessment 1 (15%) - participation in on-line discussion (1000 word equivalent). Participation over weeks 7 and 8
  • summative assessment 2 (85%) - critical appraisal of the evidence for practice improvement (3500 words) Submitted in Week 12

This module encourages you to adopt a critical, analytical and reflective approach toyour practice. It is suitable for health professionals who are extending their skills and knowledge in acute and critical care practice and are involved in the care of acutely/critically ill patients. This module can be undertaken as a stand-alone module or as part of the MSc Nursing or MSc Health Studies.

Delivery details

This module will be delivered through online distance learning. Some optional face to face workshops will be available at the main campus in Dundee. These workshops will be recorded and available to all students online via My Dundee. The workshops include topics such as arterial blood gas analysis and ECG interpretation. You will access all study materials and discussion boards through My Dundee, and whilst the module is running, tutor support is given on an as-required basis through email, discussion boards, telephone and other interactive methods.

The module aims to enable you to enhance your knowledge and skills in the assessment, care and management of acutely / critically ill adults.

Following further study, participation and engagement in the module, students will be able to:

  • critically review current perspectives of acute and critical care practice including contemporary issues relating to the quality of care such as care and compassion and person-centeredness
  • demonstrate and apply a thorough knowledge of the physiology and relevant pathophysiology underlying the assessment of acutely/ critically ill adults

Students who have not undertaken academic writing recently are encouraged to undertake Developing Academic Skills for Practice.

The aim of this module is to allow you to:

  • explore the prevention, diagnosis, acute and long term management of common cardiac conditions
  • develop and apply underpinning  knowledge, skills and attitudes at an advanced level to the management of patients with acute and long term cardiac conditions

Through application to practice, you will develop the necessary evidence-based knowledge, attitudes and skills to make a safe and effective contribution to the care and management of cardiac patients across the continuum of care.

Module overview

The module covers key areas in the management of cardiac patients including:

  • the pathophysiology and epidemiology of cardiac disease
  • cardiovascular risk,  assessment and prevention
  • the clinical investigation of cardiac conditions
  • differential diagnosis  and management of specific acute and long term cardiac conditions  e.g. Acute coronary syndrome (ACS), Heart Failure, Arrhythmias   
  • pharmacological  and non-pharmacological management of cardiac conditions
  • cardiac Rehabilitation, self-management and behaviour change
  • physical, psychological, and social impact of heart disease
  • palliative care and end of life issues in cardiac patients

Learning outcomes

  • critically review current issues in relation to the provision of care for patients presenting with acute and long term cardiac conditions.

The module assessment is a 4,500 word essay in which the student should: demonstrate a clinical example of advanced practice in a cardiovascular context.

Module Overview

This module will help you consolidate the knowledge and skills already acquired and prepare you for greater responsibilities within your practice. It will enable you to take a strategic holistic view so that you can enhance and develop clinical practice and service provision.

On completion of this module you will be able to:

  • examine and discuss core components of infection prevention and control and their application to practice
  • critically appraise the professional and accountability issues of infection prevention and control practice
  • demonstrate the ability to formulate, implement and evaluate appropriate strategies to promote quality and safe patient care
  • demonstrate the skills required to participate in the development and implementation of operational and strategic initiatives in infection prevention and control
  • critically evaluate the decision-making process, risk assessment, multi-professional and multi-disciplinary working, accountability and governance within complex situations

Assessment Strategy

The two elements of the assessment recognise the need to demonstrate sound evidence based theory and practice. You will exhibit the ability to source and evaluate evidence, utilising a problem solving approach to make clinical decisions and present key points.

  • written essay: Identify a challenge you are currently facing in your role in infection prevention and control. Critically discuss this challenge in relation to current literature and identify ways in which this challenge can be addressed (wordage 2000)
  • final Assessment: Online activity: online participation of day-today infection prevention and control activities leading up to managing an outbreak (equivalent to 2500)

Target Audience

Mode of Delivery

This module is delivered both face to face learning and a fully online.

A range of learning and teaching approaches will be adopted with the aim of fostering the development of student-centred, independent learning styles and collaborative, interactive approaches to learning. 

For the face to face delivery this will include lectures, master classes tutorials and group work. Action learning sets will be used to encourage students to develop self and group directed approaches to learning. Face to face materials will be supported with online materials using MyDundee and weekly blog activities.

For distance learning students, all materials (lectures, tutorials and master classes) will be provided using MyDundee. E-activities designed to encourage students to develop self and group directed approaches to learning will also be utilised including group e-learning activities, discussion boards and blogs.

Module Aims

The aim is for you to explore your career journey, reflecting on why you came into the health profession and the values that underpin your practice. You are encouraged to think about how this personal journey is influenced by the political landscape and culture of your home country. A range of tools are applied to help develop self-awareness and set new personal goals as you move forward in your professional career.

On completion of the module you will be able to:

  • critically analyse the values and beliefs that underpin your own professional practice
  • demonstrate cultural sensitivity by analysing and comparing your own values and beliefs with health professionals from different cultures
  • write a critically reflective professional biography

By offering a formative assessment that is aligns well with the summative assessment, you will be afforded opportunities to test out their learning activity or teaching tool with their peers and utilise formative feedback to inform their summative submission.

Module Aims

This module aims to develop you knowledge, skills and values in relation to professional education. It also aims to support you to develop critical understanding of educational theories and concepts, and how they can be applied in different contexts and cultures, with different student groups.

On completing this module, you will be able to:

  • demonstrate critical understanding of the policy and trends in education within different professional contexts
  • critically appraise and reflect on a range of educational theories and approaches, and their application with different learning environments

Assessment Strategy

The summative assessment takes the form of an extended teaching plan:

For face-to-face delivery and distance learning (online) delivery your summative assessment submissions consists of three  parts:

  1. background and rationale for the learning activity or teaching tool, including the chosen educational approach (1000 words)
  2. teaching plan (using a template provided by the module team) – students will be directed to include details of the aim, intended learning outcomes, timeline of the session, required resources, practical considerations and evaluation
  3. materials to be delivered – students will need to present the materials required to deliver the learning activity or teaching tool; the exact contents will be determined by the particular educational approach being proposed. Where possible, these materials should be submitted via Turnitin (eg. PowerPoint, handouts). However, it may not be possible to submit some materials via Turnitin (eg. Podcasts, vodcasts); in this instance, the student will be directed to seek specific guidance from the module leader at least a week before the final submission date.

The extended teaching plan submitted as the summative assessment is the only assessed piece of work for the module and, therefore, constitutes your final grade for the module.

This module aims to develop your leadership skills within your practice context, including developing understanding of organisational culture and a range of leadership models and theories. It also explores change management, as a key component of leadership in health and social care.

  • explore and analyse in depth the personal and organisational factors that influence leadership practices of self and others
  • critically evaluate theories of organisational culture and power, considering these in health and social care

  • apply a range of theory and research evidence relating to leadership and change management to address practice issues

Assessment Strategy

The module assessment takes the form of a 4000-word essay.

You will prepare a proposal for leading a change within a healthcare setting that is familiar to you. In the proposal,you must identify, justify and explore the change. You will also explore and analyse the range of organisational and leadership factors which would need to be taken into account when planning the change. The assessment is written in four parts, which are then submitted as one piece of work.

To enable health care practitioners working in maternal and infant health to critically evaluate and improve their service against WHO Standards and the Framework for Quality of Maternal and Newborn Care (QNMC).

Module Overview

The module aims to advance:

  • understand the underpinning evidence base and rationale for the WHO standards and the Framework for QMNC
  • critically appraise the maternal and newborn health outcome and quality measures necessary to ensure quality care
  • evaluate critically service characteristics against the WHO standards and the Framework for QMNC to identify gaps and challenges
  • using improvement science, principles develop a plan to address the identified service challenges
  • critically appraise the role of evidence in improving the standard of maternal and newborn care

Assessment Strategy

There are two parts to the  assessment for this module:

  1. Choose one of the WHO quality statements and critically evaluate the evidence underpinning the statement (1500 words).
  2. Using implementation science principles Framework for QMNC develop an evidence -based plan to address the previously identified service issue or challenge (2500 words).

This module is available in 10, 15, 20, 30, 40, 60 credits maximum

The module is a stand-alone or optional module for a postgraduate programme within the University.

Target Audience

All Health Professionals

Mode of Delivery

Students will negotiate their topic and learning outcomes with the module leader and work based mentor (if appropriate). Time to undertake relevant activities related to the module learning will also be identified.

On line support and discussion will be available to students. Topics for the discussion boards will be negotiated with students. Students will also be able to access peer support through the associated online community and will get 1:1 support from their academic supervisor.

Students will be largely responsible for organising their own learning. Guidance and tutorial support will be given to develop the learning contract which will require the formation of learning outcomes, details on how the learning experiences will be gained and the assessment plan and methods. Building upon a trigger to learning, for example a study day, practice update, workshop, information session or professional review the student will be provided with tutorial support (to a maximum of 4 hours, plus assignment advice of 1 hour) to produce learning outcomes for the learning contract and review progress. The negotiated learning contract will provide a framework for the all the different activities, including progress review and will culminate in the agreed assessment methods The student will utilise a range of student centred learning strategies that is deemed appropriate to their learning needs e.g. networking, shadowing, clinical supervision group tutorials, also flexible learning materials e.g. hand-outs, workbooks, literature searching and critiquing to meet their learning needs. An optional Practice Learning Log is encouraged and in the case of some professional accreditation is required.

This log should normally reflect the notional effort aligned to the module. E.g. 150 hours (approximately). Practice based learning, if an integral part of the learning contract will take place at the students' workplace or placements.

Discussions led by the work place learning are encouraged to problem solve and reflect on practice. Feedback on the elements of the learning contract will be provided on an on-going basis so that students' participate in a critical and reflective evaluation of progress

The module aims to provide students with the opportunity to gain academic credit through learning applied in a variety of settings. The module will enable students to identify their learning needs and negotiate learning to develop skills or strategies that aim to push boundaries and pioneer change in the workplace to improve effectiveness and outcomes in their organisations, This could include service users and / or carers, teams, customers, clients and /or themselves.

Negotiated assessment

The assessment is negotiated and agreed between the student, academic supervisor and / or mentor and includes:

  • Formative assessment
    • Development of a learning contract, including negotiated personal learning outcomes and identification of appropriate learning strategies
  • Summative assessment
    • Portfolio will consist of 1000 words per 10 credits of learning. (Up to 6000 words for 60 credits)

The portfolio should include:

  • Learning contract, including personal learning outcomes written to meet SCQF level 11
  • Critical reflection on learning and evaluation of the learning process.
  • Critical reflection and evaluation on how achievement of the learning outcomes enhanced personal practice or service delivery.
  • The portfolio should be underpinned by relevant evidence

Dissertation for MSc

This is the MSc Dissertation module.

Target Audience

This programme is targeted at professionals who work in health and social care who wish to extend their knowledge and understanding of research methodologies in relation to their own setting.

Mode of Delivery

This module is delivered online through My Dundee (the University virtual learning environment). Anyone with access to the internet and basic IT skills will be able to use My Dundee. You will also have the opportunity to link with your fellow students using customised discussion boards on My Dundee. You will also have a dissertation supervisor appointed.

Module Aim(s)

This module aims to enable you to develop knowledge and understanding of research or work-based project methodology. It will support you to develop critical thinking, and enable you to utilise and apply a methodology within your own area of interest or practice.

Module Overview

The dissertation involves

  • formulating an appropriate research project in conjunction with your supervisor
  • choosing and applying a method of enquiry and carrying out the research
  • relating the work to existing knowledge on the topic
  • producing a dissertation to specifications provided by the University

Assessment Strategy

The summative module assessment takes the form of a 12,000-word Dissertation, related to an area of professional practice and to the MSc Award.

The dissertation is staged into two parts. 

  • Part 1: Will be submitted three months after the start of the dissertation for formative feedback. 
  • Part 2: will be completed over the following six months with further advice and optional feedback. 

The final submission will include both part one and part two.

There are three options to choose from:

Option 1: Extensive Research Proposal Project

You will review the literature and prepare a research proposal

  • Part 1: identify a relevant professional issue, review and identify a gap in the literature
  • Part 2: using the findings of the literature review, identify a research question and prepare an extensive research proposal

Option 2: Evidence Review Project

You will plan and carry out an evidence review project

  • Part 1: identify a relevant professional issue and prepare a protocol for an evidence review
  • Part 2: using the protocol, carry out the planned project

Option 3: Work-based Project

You will plan and carry out a work-based project using a suitable approach such as quality improvement, change management or service evaluation methods.

  • Part 1: identify a relevant professional issue, review the literature and prepare a plan for a work-based project
  • Part 2: undertake the work-based project and prepare a critical reflective report incorporating a folder of evidence (from the project undertaken)

We recognise that students applying for this course may have acquired significant learning from previous educational and life/work experience. We can offer potential students the opportunity of having such learning assessed for credit. This credit would go towards your application for this course.
