What you will study

Semester 1

You will take the following core module:

Scientific Method and Skills will teach you the empirical method of knowledge acquisition and inquiry, scientific integrity, ethics and entrepreneurship and develop your practical skills relevant to research in both the academic and industrial setting.

And choose one of the following optional modules

Cell Biology and Disease will provide a detailed understanding of key topics and research directions in cell biology, focussing on the structure and function of cells, the fundamental units of life, in both normal and pathogenic contexts.

Molecular Basis of Diseases: Genetics, Epigenetics and Genomics will provide a detailed understanding of key topics in epigenetics and cancer, genome stability and diseases, genomics in relation to obesity-related diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and cancer, and post-translational modifications in the control of molecular processes.

And further choose one of the two optional modules

Principles of Marketing as Creative Practice will teach the theory of marketing and its application. The learning approach includes collaborative problem solving and reflection. The realization of marketing goals and related processes is delivered through learning within teams.

Customer Experience Design will delve into the commercial importance of the sensory and behavioural components of consumer experience.

Semester 2

You will take the following core modules:

Project Proposal and Associated Skills will develop your ability to distil and summarise complex scientific information including the background knowledge relevant to your Research Project.

Therapeutics will provide an in-depth understanding of current research directions in development of new and improved treatments for disease, of particular relevance to current research themes in both academia and the biopharmaceutical world.

Brand Media and Digital Marketing will teach you modern marketing practices relating to search, mobile campaigns, online publishing, content strategy, crowding, digital planning and strategy.


You will take the following core module:

MSc Bio-business Research Project will provide experience in the design, execution and communication of a substantive biobusiness-focused analytical project resulting in a novel business plan or critique of future innovation opportunities.

Undertaking an integrated master's degree at the University of Dundee was one of my best decisions. After my honours degree I was unsure as to whether I was capable of completing a PhD and was lacking confidence. Taking a further year to complete the master's degree allowed me to take part in a more in-depth research project within a lab that I greatly admired. During this final year I expanded my practical laboratory skills and in addition improved my problem solving and analytical thinking. Ultimately, the skills I developed and the wide range of experience I encountered during this time helped build my confidence as a research scientist and gave me the courage to progress to a full-time PhD, something I doubt I would have done if not for the experience of the master's degree.
