TEF Gold - Teaching Excellence Framework

Pharmaceuticals and the products of biotechnology have a positive impact on the lives of millions of people around the world, offering new and improved treatments for many diseases. The biotechnology and biopharmaceutical industries which lie behind these advances offer a variety of rewarding career opportunities. For many of the jobs in such companies, it is important to have both a solid grounding in research and industry standards and a strong understanding of the business side of these vibrant industries.

On this course you will explore leadership and decision making and gain a critical understanding of the role, responsibilities and competences of leadership. You will also gain an understanding of economic concepts and principles underpinning business strategy and economic-decision making.

Influential scientific research institution

We are recognised as the most influential scientific research institution in the world for pharmaceuticals (Clarivate Analytics 'The State of Innovation', 2017)

Why study this course at Dundee?

This course integrates the latest biological research and business to give you the knowledge and skills you need to forge your career in the biotech and biopharmaceutical arena. The course content reflects the strong and longstanding links the University has with businesses in this field.

You’ll be embedded in a high-quality life sciences research environment, where equipment is not just representative of the very best in academia, but is of industry standard. Our labs are recognised as being among the best internationally, and our Drug Discovery Unit is one of the few academic research units making an impact in commercial drug discovery.

What is so good about this course?

The knowledge and skills you’ll develop in research will be supplemented by the business acumen you’ll gain through our business modules and the entrepreneurship elements of the course. Depending on your module choices, you will explore leadership and decision making, international business strategy, marketing, strategic and organisational management, and business start-ups – areas of particular importance in the biotech and biopharmaceutical sector.

You’ll also have the opportunity to develop your business skills during a bio-business project, where you will focus your business ideas on a promising bioscience research development, allowing you to apply what you have learned to a real life project.

This mix of knowledge and skills are what the biotech and biopharmaceutical industries are looking for in their future employees, and understanding these in line with research and industry requirements will help prepare you for your future career in this field.

My Biochemistry degree at the University of Dundee gave me a comprehensive understanding of the Drug Development process which acted as a great foundation to the start of my career. My Honours Project searching for drugs to treat African Sleeping Sickness and modules in Drug Development gave me a deeper understanding of how a drug is taken from the bench to the bedside and gave me the skills I now use in my job in regulatory affairs.
