From scenic waterfront walks to hidden foodie gems, here are Maryam’s 10 must-do activities for students exploring Dundee
Published on 11 February 2025 by Maryam Gherbi

When I moved to Dundee to start my degree, I was clueless about the city, I didn’t even know Dundee had a waterfront! Welcome Week amazed me, there was so much to explore and coming from a small English town, I didn’t know where to start. Whether you're into experiencing new cultures, trying different food, or exploring nature, Dundee offers something for everyone. Here's my list of the top 10 things to do in Dundee!
Walk along Dundee's waterfront
Take a relaxing stroll along the waterfront starting at Magdalen Green, a park to the west of campus. Grab a coffee at Bridgeview Station to fuel your walk! Enjoy treats along the way: a hot doughnut from Heather Street Food or ice cream from Jannettas. It's the perfect way to enjoy views of the River Tay.
Experience Dundee Contemporary Arts (DCA)
It’s a place to get inspired and creative. Explore art exhibitions, catch new films, or join workshops in photography or wood engraving. Play locally developed games at Drop in and Play events. Enjoy the bar and the restaurant (the Piri Piri fries are a must) and find unique gifts in the gallery shop.
Dine at Franks Wine and Pasta Bar
The perfect spot for a cosy date or a night out with friends, offering delicious freshly made pasta and incredible tiramisu. With great wine and warm vibes, it’s a must-visit in Dundee.
Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design (DJCAD) Degree show
The annual degree show at DJCAD is a wonderful way to end the academic year and begin your summer. The incredible work of final-year art and design students is showcased, offering you a glimpse into the creative minds of the future.
Explore V&A Dundee - Scotland's design museum
Discover Scotland’s first design museum and the first V&A (Victoria & Albert) museum outside of London. Showcasing exhibits on art, design, and culture. The bold architecture and waterfront location make the V&A a must-see location.
Visit the Botanic Garden
The Botanic Garden is the perfect place for a tranquil walk to reconnect with nature after a long day of studying. Located over 9.5 hectares on the banks of the River Tay, the garden houses a variety of indigenous British plants and species from all over the world. Just show your student ID card to get in free.
Climb the Law
Hike or drive to the top of Dundee’s extinct volcano. The Law has a panoramic view of the city and is the perfect place for sunset or sunrise.
Stroll along Perth Road
Perth Road, which is adjacent to the main University Campus, is lined with independent shops, boutiques, cafés, galleries, and restaurants. Whether you are looking for great food, shopping, or simply a stroll, Perth Road never fails.
Relax at Tartan Coffee House
Tucked along Perth Road, Tartan is the perfect cosy spot to enjoy a coffee, chai, or some homemade treats. It is an ideal place to catch up with friends, studying or enjoying each other’s company over a nice warm drink.
Visit Broughty Ferry
Head to Broughty Ferry, the seaside suburb of Dundee and explore the historic castle or relax on the beach with some fish and chips. The ideal trip away from the city.
