My experience of living in student accommodation in Dundee

From making friends to feeling at home, student accommodation helped Lemuela settle into university life

Going to university is a big step, and choosing the right accommodation can really set the tone for your experience. I had the pleasure of living in Seabraes student halls during my first year at Dundee, and I can confidently say it was a fantastic choice.

Moving in: the start of something new

The moving-in process was smooth and welcoming. The student ambassadors and staff were incredibly helpful, making the hectic experience of settling into a new place feel like a breeze. I still remember the thrill of seeing my new living space for the first time. Meeting my flatmates was a highlight; we were all in the same boat, excited and a bit nervous about starting this new chapter. It felt like the beginning of a great adventure.

Socialising and making connections

One of the best parts of living in university accommodation was the chance to socialise with other students. Since most of my flatmates were on different courses, I got to meet so many interesting people from various backgrounds. The communal living atmosphere really encouraged us to hang out and get to know each other, making it easy to form friendships that extended beyond the flat.

Fun events and activities

Throughout the year, events were organised that made it easy to meet new friends and have a great time. During Welcome Week, we had movie nights, pizza parties, and even trips to IKEA, which were excellent opportunities to bond over shared experiences. These activities not only broke the ice but also added so much excitement to my university life.

Convenient location and amenities

Living in Seabraes has its perks. It’s just a five-minute walk from campus, which was perfect for me as a medical student. The close proximity to the library and lecture halls made it super easy to get to class on time. Plus, being only two minutes away from a bus stop to the University’s School of Medicine, based within the Ninewells campus, was incredibly convenient.

As for amenities, Seabraes is perfectly situated near Perth Road, the main hub for students. With loads of cafés, restaurants, and shops right on your doorstep, you’ll never run out of places to explore.

Great living facilities

My room was spacious and came with an en-suite bathroom, which was a fantastic bonus. The large communal living area and kitchen provided plenty of space for everyone to relax and hang out. The common room became my go-to spot; it features a ping pong table, a foosball table, a piano, and a cosy TV room, making it the perfect place to unwind or host mini-events. I even celebrated my birthday there, and it turned into an unforgettable party!

A supportive community

The support services available from the accommodation team were also a huge plus. With a team based in the common room, any issues I had could be addressed quickly and easily. Plus, there’s a ResLife team member who checks in on us at least once a semester. This added layer of support made it clear that the staff genuinely cared about our wellbeing.

Why university accommodation is the place to be

Overall, my experience living in university accommodation was nothing short of wonderful. The sense of community, social opportunities, and supportive environment made it a perfect home away from home.
