Grace shares 6 tips for maintaining balance and having fun at university

Looking after your mental and physical health while balancing study and student life can sometimes feel daunting. However, it’s not as hard as it seems! Take it from me – I’m in my third year of university, and I’m going to share my top 6 tips for maintaining balance and having fun.
Tip 1 - Time management
Spending a few minutes planning your day can make such a big difference. I recommend using a planner – it’s a game-changer! You’ll be able to organise everything: your coursework, social life, and hobbies. When you manage your time well, you’ll find you have more time to relax, which keeps you feeling motivated and focused. Plus, getting your work done leaves you with more time to enjoy the best parts of student life.
Tip 2 - Maintaining a balanced diet
I know what you’re thinking – no, sadly, you can’t just survive on ramen noodles and toast (trust me, I’ve tried!). But one of the simplest and most effective ways to help you feel your best is by eating a balanced diet. It doesn’t have to be fancy, just a good mix of fruits, veggies, and proteins. This will keep your mood steady and give you plenty of natural energy for studying and social events.
Tip 3 - Get enough sleep
This is something that made a huge difference in my university experience. Honestly, I didn’t think sleep was that important at first, but once I got into a good routine – around 8-9 hours a night – my focus and energy were so much better. No one wants to be too tired to concentrate in class or miss out on social plans due to lack of sleep.
Tip 4 - Practise self-care
Balancing coursework and student life can make you feel overwhelmed or burned out at times. But when you prioritise yourself, you feel more centred and ready to tackle all your responsibilities. Self-care doesn’t have to be complicated. For me, nothing beats a good walk to clear my mind. It helps me reset and feel more connected.
Tip 5 - Stay connected
Making connections is so important, whether it’s joining a study group, a society, or just hanging out with friends. These moments give you space to unwind and relax with other students. Socialising isn’t just a break from studying; it’s a reminder that university is about so much more. It’s about building relationships, making memories, and connecting with the people around you.
Tip 6 - University services
The University offers so many amazing services to support students throughout the year. Student services can help with all sorts of things – counselling, academic advice, health, and more. I’ve reached out a few times when things felt overwhelming, and it made a world of difference. The lecturers and staff are also super supportive, and if you're stressed about a deadline, they’re always open to talk and give advice. So don’t hesitate to reach out – it’s what these services are there for, and they really want to help.
Our student services offer a wide range of support and advice to students.
