On 27 October 2024, they attended a ceremony at the War Memorial in Arbroath to remember the 80th anniversary of Carlo Roberto Carini’s death. The event was organised by ANPI (National Association of Italian Partisans), London.

Carlo Roberto Carini was born in Arbroath to Italian parents. He played football for Arbroath FC’s junior team, and later for Piacenza FC in Italy. In 1943, he left football to join the Resistance, fighting against fascist and Nazi forces. He was part of the 141st Garibaldi Brigade in the Val d’Arda division.

On 31 October 1944, he and his friend Aldo Bruschi were arrested and taken to the command centre of the Italian Social Republic in Piacenza. After being tortured, Carini was executed the next morning. A monument now stands at the place where he was killed.

The team also helped organise “Voices of Resistance,” an exhibition about anti-fascist politician Giacomo Matteotti. Curated by Italian historian and filmmaker Alfio Bernabei, the exhibition was shown in London in summer 2024, and later in Dundee in January 2025. Professor Jeff Blackford, Dean of the School of Humanities, opened the event.

At the launch, Alfio Bernabei gave a powerful talk comparing modern European politics with the 1920s and 1930s. The event welcomed both university staff and members of the public and helped bring different academic disciplines together.

The exhibition closed on 1 May, just after Liberation Day in Italy (25 April). On the final day, a film screening of The Assassination of Matteotti was held. Alfio Bernabei joined remotely to introduce the movie, linking it to Italy’s postwar political and cultural history.

Following this success, Omar Feraboli was invited to speak in Glasgow on 26 April 2025, at an event marking 80 years since Italy’s liberation from fascism. He spoke about Matteotti, Carini, the Dundee exhibition, and the lessons these stories hold for Europe today.
