Breaking into the world of data science wasn’t easy—but the journey has been incredibly rewarding. I’m Jayakrishnan from Kerala, India, and a 2023 graduate of the University of Dundee School of Business, where I completed my MSc in Business Analytics and Big Data with Merit. I’m now working as a Data Scientist at Tesco Group, specialising in Business Intelligence.

Why I Chose the School of Business

I chose to study at the School of Business because of its strong reputation for combining academic rigour with practical, real-world application. The MSc in Business Analytics and Big Data stood out to me for its emphasis on data-driven decision-making, modern analytics tools, and interdisciplinary learning—exactly what I needed to build a career in data science and business intelligence.

The School’s commitment to innovation, global perspective, and strong industry links made it the ideal place to gain not only technical skills but also strategic business insights. What really made the experience even more meaningful was the supportive faculty and the diverse student community that created a rich, collaborative learning environment.

Support that made a difference

The school played a crucial role in shaping my transition into the world of data. The curriculum was well-aligned with industry trends, offering practical exposure to tools such as Python, Power BI, Tableau, R, SQL, and various other BI technologies.

Beyond the classroom, the faculty was incredibly supportive—offering mentorship, encouraging research, and guiding me through hands-on projects that mirrored real-world business scenarios. I was also given the opportunity to serve as a Business School Representative, which significantly enhanced my leadership, communication, and organisational skills. This role helped me grow both personally and professionally while allowing me to give back to the student community.

Access to data labs, case competitions, and internship opportunities gave me the chance to apply theory in practical settings, which helped build the confidence I now carry into my professional life.

Preparing for the real world

My studies laid a strong foundation for the role I’m in today. I built a solid understanding of statistical analysis, forecasting, and data modelling, all of which are core to my work in data science. Learning tools like SQL, Python, and data visualisation platforms gave me the technical confidence to work with large datasets and create meaningful insights.

One of the most valuable aspects was learning how to translate data into actionable business strategies. That combination of technical expertise and business understanding is what separates a good data professional from a great one.

What I do today

In my current role, every day is different—and that’s what makes it exciting. I begin by preparing and reviewing performance reports to track key business metrics, flag anomalies, and share trends with business heads to support decision-making.

A large part of my job is report automation, where I work with tools like Tableau, SAP Business Objects, and SQL to ensure stakeholders get accurate, real-time insights. I also manage information reporting systems and help maintain data accuracy across platforms.

Throughout the day, I write complex SQL queries, work with data warehouses, build predictive models, and collaborate with cross-functional teams—including finance, supply chain, trading, and logistics. Together, we turn raw data into strategies that move the business forward.

What excites me most is the impact I can make through data. Seeing raw information transform into insights that shape real business decisions is incredibly rewarding.

Advice to future students

If you’re considering the Business Analytics with Big Data degree, my advice is to go beyond the classroom and actively explore the field. Focus on mastering essential tools like SQL, Python, Power BI, Tableau, and data warehousing, as these are key in both academics and the job market. Start working on real-world projects early to build practical experience and a strong portfolio. Don’t wait until the last minute to prepare for interviews—begin early, stay consistent, and treat every setback as a learning opportunity. Stay curious, keep upgrading your skills, and success will follow.

How my degree shaped my future

This degree gave me more than just technical skills—it gave me direction and clarity. I now have a better sense of where I want to specialise in the future—whether that’s advanced predictive modelling, automation, or strategic BI leadership. It also ignited my passion for continuous learning and staying ahead of technological trends.
