New partnership to advance medical imaging in Scotland

The University of Dundee has partnered with NeuroLogica, a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., to collaborate on research aimed at pushing the boundaries of medical imaging in healthcare.

Experts from the University’s Tayside Innovation MedTech Ecosystem (TIME) Neuro Team will work with NeuroLogica, utilising state-of-the-art Photon Counting Detector (PCD) CT imaging technology to analyse differences in patients’ tissue characteristics. The technology, deployed by NeuroLogica for the first time in Europe, could provide experts with more accurate insights into stroke and cancer care.

Professor Iris Grunwald, Chair of Neuroradiology at the University, said, “With NeuroLogica’s new, emerging technologies, we are currently witnessing the biggest innovation in imaging in the last decade.

“By utilising this state-of-the-art equipment and Dundee’s unique research and clinical expertise, we can work together to modernise the future of patient care.”

The announcement of this new partnership builds on Professor Grunwald’s existing relationship with NeuroLogica, with the two having previously worked together to improve pre-hospital imaging on Mobile Stroke Unit ambulances.

TIME has been created to bring together contributors from the University of Dundee, NHS Tayside and commercial partners, supported with funding from the Tay Cities Deal, to bring together academic, clinical and industrial expertise to bridge the care gap from bench side to bedside.

Professor Grunwald, an executive member of SINAPSE – Scottish Imaging Network: A Platform for Scientific Excellence, and her team will also utilise NeuroLogica’s PCD CT imaging technology to enhance image quality and resolution of current imaging practices.
