The Dundee International Institute of Central South University (DIICSU), a partnership between Dundee’s School of Science and Engineering and Central South University (CSU), has welcomed its first intake of students.

Almost 300 students have been welcomed as part of DIICSU’s first intake, embarking upon Honours Degree courses in Mathematics, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering with Transportation, and Computing Science.

Students will spend all four years studying at CSU, being taught by staff from both universities. An opening ceremony on Tuesday 6 September marked the formal start of classes, with leaders from both Dundee and Central South, one of China’s leading universities, in attendance.

“It is hugely exciting to welcome our first students to the DIICSU,” said Wendy Alexander, Vice-Principal (International) at Dundee.

“These students will enjoy high-quality teaching, delivered by universities with world-class reputations for excellence in engineering and science.

“As two research intense universities, this partnership also presents so many opportunities for collaborative work between some of the leading experts in their fields. With our first students now enrolled, we are now at the start of what promises to be a very productive relationship.”

Professor Li Zhihong, Vice President of Central South University, said, "The University of Dundee is one of the most important international strategic partners of Central South University.

“The two universities have carried out exchanges and collaboration since 2009. This year is the first enrolment of DIICSU, which has pushed our collaboration to a new height.

"DIICSU will inherit the centennial tradition of Central South University, introduce high-quality educational resources from the University of Dundee, and create a free and open international learning environment in accordance with the educational philosophy of an international world-class university."

Central South University is regarded as one of China’s most distinguished seats of learning. Situated in the city of Changsha, in the province of Hunan, CSU was ranked 101st – 150th in the 2022 Academic Ranking of World Universities and 39th in THE’s Asia University Rankings 2022.

The University of Dundee is the only Scottish institution with three Chinese Government-approved Joint Educational Programmes/Institutes (JEP/I) with three Double World Class Universities.
