Jeanett Mercedes Gonzales Del Valle Acuna graduated from the University of Dundee with an LLM Law (General) in 2022. This course enables students to customise their degree according to their interests by selecting from a wide range of modules.

When asked why she decided to study at the University of Dundee, Jeanette said, ‘Throughout my life, I have always dreamed of studying abroad. In Peru, the University of Dundee is well known, especially for its courses in law and renewable energy.’

Speaking specifically about the city of Dundee and her free time, Jeanett explained that in contrast to living in Lima, the capital of Peru, ‘Dundee feels calm and peaceful, and I love how friendly the people in Scotland are.

‘I joined the Latin Society at the University. I am incredibly proud to be Peruvian; our food is truly amazing! We organised events to showcase the culture of Latin America, and I had the chance to connect with people from many different backgrounds.’

When asked about her decision to study the LLM Law (General), Jeanett said, ‘The course was perfect for me because it allowed me to choose modules that matched my interests. Unlike more specialised LLM degrees, this course offered a variety of subjects, which was a huge advantage. For example, I had the opportunity to study renewable energy, a completely new area for me.’

‘Learning about renewable energy gave me valuable knowledge that helped when I later applied for jobs in this sector. My experience during the course taught me that it’s important to be open to new knowledge and to step outside your comfort zone. Exploring new areas not only broadens your expertise but can also open exciting new career paths.’

Jeanett explains how the knowledge and experience gained from her LLM Law (General) has positively impacted her career.

‘The LLM Law (General) provided me with a strong master’s level foundation across a wide range of legal areas. More importantly, it introduced me to new fields like renewable energy, an area I quickly grew passionate about. This passion inspired me to pursue job opportunities in the renewable energy sector.

‘Having knowledge in diverse areas has also helped me connect with people from different fields. It has opened doors to new conversations and collaborations, making my career journey even more rewarding.’

Taking advantage of the Careers Service during her time at the University of Dundee, Jeanett said it was ‘incredibly helpful in preparing me for the UK job market. They guided me in writing my CV, which is quite different from the format used in Peru.’

Following graduation, Jeanett secured an exciting role in the renewable energy sector. ‘I am proud to say that I secured a role as a Company Compliance Assistant at Bright Renewables, where I still work today.

‘Bright Renewables plays a vital role in energising the community energy sector by helping communities own and operate renewable energy projects, maximising the benefits for local initiatives. Through all my jobs, I have always sought work that has a positive impact on society, and I am grateful to be part of a company that shares this vision.

‘At Bright Renewables, I support the contracts and compliance team. My role involves assisting with negotiations with clients and other parties, as well as ensuring regulatory compliance with all key government bodies. Every day, I feel inspired knowing that my work contributes to a more sustainable and empowered community.’

When asked what advice she would give to prospective LLM Law (General) students, Jeanette said, ‘Be open to exploring different fields and opportunities. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. Embrace new challenges, meet people from diverse backgrounds, and be curious.’

Studying the LLM Law (General) course provides students with a wide range of modules, allowing them to develop existing areas of specialisation or explore new interests.
