The inter-university sporting contest, which takes place on Wednesday 23 March, is the biggest amateur sporting event in Dundee’s calendar.

This year’s sports include badminton, basketball, football, golf, rugby, netball and tennis.

The tournament usually takes place annually, however old rivalries were paused due to the pandemic. Clubs are now ready to battle it out for the first time since 2019, with Abertay determined to come back with a bang and exact revenge on Dundee, who are the current holders of the trophy.

Adam Brady, Sports Union President at the University of Dundee, said, “It is absolutely fantastic to have Varsity return to Dundee after a break of two years.

“In a year where the Sports Union at the University of Dundee has seen record engagement and membership, Varsity is a great opportunity to celebrate this.

“We’re looking forward to competing against our peers at Abertay once again, and hopefully keep our hands on the trophy!”

Michael Devlin, Sports Development Officer at Abertay University, added, "Sport and physical activity have a huge role to play in the student experience and it's great to have Varsity return after two years away.

“Varsity is the biggest multi-sport event in Dundee with hundreds of students participating over the course of the day, and is the event students look forward to most. It's always a great way to finish off the competitive league and cup seasons and we will be hoping for a few upsets over the course of the day.”

This year’s challenge takes place on Wednesday 23 March with around twenty contests taking place throughout the day, including cheerleading and dance performances. The tournament will conclude with the women’s basketball match at 5pm.
