Dow Memorial Trust: Student Support

Nurturing student wellbeing through dedicated support initiatives

Published on 11 April 2025

Professor and Dr Dow understood that studying Medicine or Dentistry is challenging, with demanding subjects, an intense workload, and the extreme emotional impact of caring for people in difficult situations. That’s why they believed it was so important for students to be holistically supported throughout their studies.

To many medical and dental students at the University of Dundee, Dr Agnes Dow was much-loved and known affectionately as their ‘agony aunt.’ She was someone they could turn to for support with all sorts of worries, both about their studies and their personal lives.

Today, the Trust positively impacts student welfare by enabling the university to run a student support scheme within both the Medical and Dental Schools, ensuring all Dentistry and Medicine students can access guidance and resources to help their emotional, mental and personal wellbeing.

The Trust also assists students facing unexpected financial challenges. The Dow Emergency Fund offers short-term help, such as loans or grants, so students can keep focusing on their studies without extra worry.

“The Dow Memorial Trust's support goes far beyond financial assistance. Their generosity ensures all Dentistry and Medicine students have everything they need to excel, including access to pastoral care, which helps ensure their well-being and success from their first day through to graduation. For that, we are deeply grateful.”
