Dow Memorial Trust: Innovative Education
Enabling students and researchers to work and learn in world-class learning environments
Published on 11 April 2025
Professor and Dr Dow believed medical and dental students at the University of Dundee should not receive just a good education, but an exceptional and truly memorable one. Their belief in the power of a stimulating learning environment was vividly demonstrated by Professor Dow's innovative approach to teaching, famously bringing a contortionist into his anatomy class to illustrate anatomical concepts in a unique way.

Continuing this legacy of forward-thinking education, the Trust has generously invested in improving teaching and learning facilities across the University, ensuring that our Medicine and Dentistry students can learn in the best possible environment, including:
- The Dow Clinical Simulation Suite: A hands-on, true-to-life simulated clinical training in a 6-bedded ward, examination rooms, and a High Dependency Unit for students to master their clinical skills
- The Dow Anatomical Suite: A specialised multi-purpose training space with nine teaching bays where students can practise and perfect their anatomical skills in a safe and supportive environment.
- TayMed Connect: A state-of-the-art ecosystem offering a vital space for healthcare professionals to hone their skills and for collaborative work that drives improvements in patient care within the NHS.
By supporting these world-class learning environments, the Dow Memorial Trust ensures that the University of Dundee remains at the forefront of innovation in medical and dental education, a fitting tribute to the forward-thinking vision of Professor and Dr Dow.
