This is the prime research award of the Society for an "outstanding contribution to fungal research" over a sustained career. It is named after the late John Webster, an eminent British mycologist at the University of Exeter.

Geoff’s research on fungal metal and mineral transformations has established the field of geomycology within geomicrobiology, and has extended understanding of the important roles of fungi in element cycling, mineral dissolution and formation, and metal transformations. These processes also have applications in bioremediation, element biorecovery of critical elements, biodeterioration of cultural heritage and in the built environment, and fungal production of novel nanoscale biomaterials. Geoff has published extensively in these areas, this year passing the milestone of over 300 refereed papers.
