Previously unseen works by acclaimed artist and teacher Alan Watson are on display at the University’s Tower Foyer Gallery.

The Cupar-based artist died in 2019, leaving behind a body of work inspired by the countryside and farmland near his home. Having focused on his family’s maritime heritage earlier in his career, these latter works were largely unseen until this new exhibition.

It is a fitting location for the exhibition, with Alan having studied at the University’s Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design from 1976-81, taking on a role as a part-time tutor after graduating.

Matthew Jarron, the University’s Museum Curator, said, “Alan’s work has a powerful, expressive quality that is immediately apparent in both his figurative and landscape scenes.

“These later works show him painting in bold colours and using collage to experiment with form and texture. The results are absolutely stunning and we are delighted to be showing them.”

The exhibition runs from Saturday 5 October until Friday 20 December 2024 and is open Monday to Friday 9:30 – 19:00, and Saturday from 11:00 – 16:00. Admission is free.
